Our vision mission for the holidays!

This post is sponsored by GMAC.  All opinions are my own.

I grew up with adventurous parents who traveled with us and took us out on new adventures on a weekly basis. It’s something that I loved as a little girl and I find that I’m doing the same for my own girls. Even though I do allow my oldest some screen time at home, our free time is usually spent outside of the house doing something fun and exciting! It can be hard in the winter when the weather won’t allow for a lot of outdoor activities but I love the holidays and being able to take the girls out to look at Christmas lights, visit Santa and so many other fun holiday events.

I recently learned that nearsightedness (myopia) is growing at a rapid rate in children.  Myopia is a common vision condition in which people can see close objects clearly, but objects farther away appear blurred and is something that I dealt with as a child. (Among other things, I actually had a lot of vision problems when I was young.)

My parents caught it fairly early and with the help of doctors I was able to correct it and I now no longer need glasses.  However since I know firsthand how difficult it can be to have vision problems, I want to be proactive about it for both my girls.  I was a very shy kid and when I couldn’t see the board at school, I never spoke up to tell my teacher. I was just lucky that my parents made sure to get my eyes checked at a very early age to catch my vision issues.

Layla is at the age where she wants to watch all the Christmas movies and as much as I love watching them with her, I also wanted to take her and her baby sister out to experience Christmas lights in person!  Just seeing Christmas lights and holiday decorations on TV does not compare to the real thing and it’s one of the best things in the world to see their reactions to all the beautiful lights and holiday decor.

We had so much fun on our Vision Mission before we headed to the eye doctor! Since vision problems run in my family, I take my kids to the eye doctor as part of their annual health check up.  It’s very important to me to make sure that we catch any issues early on.

If your kid hasn’t gone to the eye doctor this year, don’t worry! Make it a fun day and have a Vision Mission with your child before you head to the eye doctor.  And don’t forget to ask about new myopia treatment options! A visit to the doctor can not only make an immediate difference in your child’s health today, but also may slow the progression of myopia before it leads to more serious eye diseases later in life.

Too much time on screens and devices and not enough time outside can be a risk factor for myopia.  Quality family time is always a great way to take a break from screens.  Download the template below to plan your Vision Mission with your kids!
