Layla’s 7th birthday was quite different this year as we usually celebrate with a big group of her friends. Since we couldn’t do that this year, I wanted to make it fun and special so set out to create the best DIY Rainbow birthday party that I could!
I’m admittedly, a lazy DIY-er I don’t like to spend a lot of time or buy a ton of materials so I can promise you that all my DIYs are easy to do and can be done quickly.
Easy DIY Ideas for Rainbow Theme Birthday Party
I didn’t want an over the top party, because this mama ain’t got time for that! I just wanted to make it cute for Layla and to able to take fun photos.
These are the DIYs for moms like me that want things to look nice but also have a gazillion other things to do, so I promise you that you can tackle these quickly and easily!
DIY Rainbow photo wall
The party was in our backyard and we actually don’t have much back there, so we used our deck to decorate and it turned out really well!
Tips for creating the rainbow balloon garland
I purchased a kit to create the rainbow garland balloons and it was easy to assemble. The hardest part is just taking the time to blow up the balloons and tying them (get ready for some sore fingers!).
My tip is to start the process a week early so you can slowly build up the garland. Tip: Carve out a space in your house if you can! It does take up quite a bit of room as you build it!
Having a balloon inflator was a lifesaver and highly recommend it so you can literally save your breath for other things!
We attached the balloon garland using zip ties. It was easy and super secure!
Because the balloon garland is held together with a balloon garland strip, it created an easy way for me to attach the balloons to the railing on our deck.
Creating a rainbow wall background
The photo wall was so easy to do and all you need are streamers and a staple gun! It took a bit of time to set up but overall, it was super easy.
Definitely do this with someone because it’s much easier with two people. One to hold the streamers and unroll them/hold them straight and the other to staple it to the poles.
This could easily be done on the side of a house as well! Another plus is that it was very easy to take down and clean up.
And as you can see it created such a fun backdrop for photos!
Rainbow birthday party favor ideas
During this unusual time of staying home and social distancing, I thought why not pass out masks and hand sanitizers as a very appropriate party favor!
Even though everyone attended was family and who have been all very cautious leading up to the party, I wanted everyone to feel safe while we were gathered together.
Custom hand sanitizer labels
I bought travel sized hand sanitizers and created the labels and printed them out with my printer on sticker paper. It was very easy to do and everyone loved them!
The labels matched the prints that I had printed out and framed as well.
I also got these cookies made for Layla that matched the prints and I absolutely adore them!! They are so so cute and I want to order custom cookies for every occasion now!
DIY Flower Arrangements
We have lots of flower stands around us so I stopped by to pick up a few bouquets and then just spread them out between a few buckets and containers to create new bouquets for the party.
I found the cute tubs at Hobby Lobby on clearance for $2 each!
Spongebob Rainbow Cake
And lastly, how could we do a rainbow party without a rainbow cake? Layla has been loving Spongebob lately so we found this cute Rainbow Spongebob to use as a cake topper and she loved it!
DIY Rainbow Birthday Party Ideas for adults and kids
It was not only Layla’s birthday but also my dad’s 70th birthday! I made sure to get a “0” balloon so that he could partake in the photos as well! It made it so fun and love that we all got to celebrate my dad’s big milestone birthday together.
Our entire crew! Thanks goodness for a tripod and remote! It helped make taking pictures so much easier!
So thankful for my husband who helped me put together the party. I have to share that he HATES balloons and being around all those balloons with the garland made him so nervous but he did it for me and Layla of course!
