When organizing my kids’ legos and other kinds of toys, I like to keep certain details in mind to find the best storage solutions that make the most sense for the item and space we have. Here are some things I think about when organizing that also may be helpful to you when planning your lego storage solution:

The best tips for lego storage in your home

  • Size of items – are they big or small? Is the collection large?
  • Space available in room – Would this be best to make a whole area for or could this be kept under the bed?
  • Functionality – How easy will it be for my kids to get the toys out and clean them up on their own?
  • Price – What is my budget? What is realistic?
  • Organizing by color
  • Organizing by type
  • Style/aesthetic – Will this be more of a display item or will it be hidden/tucked away?
  • Labels – Are labels necessary for this type of organization?

Where to buy Lego Storage and Organization

Amazon – They always have a huge selection of organizers to choose from. These bins are my personal favorite as they stack so well. This storage bag and play mat is highly rated and it’s seriously the easiest way to clean up any mess.

The Container Store – has the best selection for containers that look great even if you have them sitting out! The lego storage head is such a cute idea. If your kids has a ton of minifigures, this display case would look cute sitting out on a shelf but easy to play with too.

Target – Great selection and great price. A lot of their containers are great for all toys, not just legos but this tote set is great for quick clean ups and you can even travel with it!

Walmart – The best options for Lego storage bricks! These drawers look like giant legos but they hold all the legos and you can even stack them!

Bin Lego Storage Ideas

Bins are always a great way to organize all different kinds of kids toys. I love when each item has it’s own place, and different shaped bins are a really easy way to make that possible. You can find really affordable bins at the dollar store, amazon, target and the container store. I love using clear bins so you are able to see what is inside each bin, or white bins for a really crips clean look.

For my girls I like to make sure that everything is easy to access and that they can organize it themselves as well (less work for mom!) Here are a few ways that we keep our legos organized at home and keep scrolling for lots more great ideas!

Store each set in plastic bins

Separate and store each lego set together in clear plastic bins! There are so many different small pieces that come in the lego kits, that it is great to store them all together so that your kids can create their masterpieces easily.

I found a photo of the set online and printed it out. Alternatively you could take a photo of the assembled set and print it out or cut it out from the box and tape it to the front of the box!

*Pro Tip* I also store the instruction manuals that go along with each kit inside of the bins! This way you have everything in one place.

These storage bins are simple, inexpensive and stackable!

The container box with lid is really handy for not only legos but all the little toys my kids collect! For legos we organize them by themes or colors so that when she is building something, we can easily find the piece that she needs. I like doing smaller groups as it’s so much less work than digging through a gigantic box!

Craft organizers for small pieces

These plastic crafting organizers are the perfect solution for all of the little pieces! Typically these are used to store beads/buttons, etc. and the different compartments make it easy to separate all the different colors/styles.

These plastic containers also are really great to travel! If you are looking for a lego travel case, this is a great solution. You can grab this and take it in the car, on the plane or keep it in your backpack to have handy when you’re out and about.

I always love packing toys like this to keep my girls occupied, and this keeps everything organized even while on the go.

LEGO storage with building base

Sometimes you just need one big storage to sweep everything into and this storage bin is my favorite as it’s got a building base built right onto the lid! My daughter loves to build right on on it and it’s great to have on the floor so it’s easy to build on.

This one is sold out but I found a few other options for storage with the building base built right in!

The best lego organizer for travel

If you want a true lego travel case, this one is a must have! You can move the sections to make them bigger or smaller and fit your pieces into. The case is nice and sturdy and has a handle that your kids can hold onto easily.

How to organize LEGO instruction booklets

If you like to organize by sets, it’s best to keep the LEGO instruction booklets with the sets, however if you want to just keep them together, these mesh zipper pouches are the best way. I keep our playroom organized with cube storage and these fit great in the cubes and they also stack nicely.

I keep other things like puzzles and even board games in these pouches and they keep everything neat and organized. If you want to personalize them, it’s a fun and easy DIY to do with your Cricut! You can see how I did it here for our kid’s road trip survival kits!

Clear drawers in cube storage

These clear plastic drawer organizers are awesome as you can easily see what pieces are in each box. You could do them by color, or by style/kit etc. The possibilities are endless but these are super functional. It’s also great if you have cube storage like many of us do for our playrooms, as you can put them inside of the cubby shelves. They fit right in and each bin has it’s place!

Rolling cart with drawers

One great solution I came across to organize legos Is to separate the pieces by color. While this may seem like a tedious task in the beginning, it absolutely pays off in the end and is also aesthetically pleasing to look at.

This minifigure display frame is also a great way to show off your minifigures! You can keep it on your table top or hang it on your wall.
