5 must have baby and kid products to get through cold season

best kids products for cold and flu season

I’m not one of those lucky people that seem to escape cold and flu season without getting sick.  I’m the opposite and get sick several times during the cold season and my daughter is the same.  With a new baby on the way, I’m prepping our household with everything I can to help keep us as healthy as possible.  I know that I won’t be able to avoid getting sick.  Having a child in daycare pretty much guarantees it, but I’m going to try to prevent it as much as I can!

Must have baby and kid products to get through cold season

I am all for natural remedies and tools that can make my life easier and help my child get through the illness quickly.  All of these products are ones that I’ve used that can help kids feel better or at least decrease the symptoms to get them through the duration of the cold or flu.

Nosiboo Nasal Aspirator:
to remove mucus and help kids breathe better

My husband frequently gets sinus infections and he keeps them away by using a sinus rinse system which he got me started on and it truly helps! With kids and especially babies, it’s not a viable option as it’s too hard to control how it works on them and also to get them to sit still!  But I recently tried out the Nosiboo Nasal Aspirator which is the perfect solution to unclog their little noses so that they can breathe better.

It’s a small machine that removes nasal mucus fast and effectively.  Best of all, it’s easy to use and easy to clean!  You can buy it here (it’s on Amazon Prime!) and I highly recommend that you get it before cold season starts so that you are ready when your child starts getting the sniffles.  It’s something that you can use with multiple kids and even adults can use it!

I really like that you can control the suction power so it can be as gentle as you need it to be but also if you have an older child with some stubborn mucus, it can help get with that too.  The big advantage of this machine over the ones that you just use with your mouth (which I also use) is that it’s way more effective at getting out all the snot and mucus. It works faster and it really helps them breathe a lot better.

ELDERBERRY :
to boost immune system

I hadn’t heard of Elderberry until last winter when my daughter had been going through what was probably her 3rd cold of the season and I was desperate to keep her healthy going forward.  I was at the drugstore trying to find medicine.  Other than the occasional kid’s Tylenol, I only use natural remedies for her, so I saw a bottle of elderberry that said it would help boost the immune system.  It got me curious, so I then sat on my phone googling everything I could about it.

I ended up getting the Elderberry syrup to help her get through that cold and then I found these Elderberry gummies that I could give to her along with her daily multivitamin.

I like these ones that are made with all natural ingredients that have the elderberry extract along with vitamins A, C, D, E, and zinc to help boost your child’s immune system. After using it for the rest of the cold and flu season last year, I do think it helped her from getting more sick throughout the season so I’m definitely using it again this year along with taking an Elderberry supplement for myself.

Honey:
to help soothe coughs

I don’t like giving my daughter medicine for a cough but seeing her suffer through her cough was so hard on both of us.  Honey was a lifesaver.  Not only did she love taking it, it truly helped soothe her throat and control her cough.  Please note: don’t give honey to kids under 1

Always check with your doctor before giving your child any kind of medicine or remedy to help with their illness.  In my experience, I am happy with using something as natural as honey to give her a little bit of relief when her cough just won’t go away.

I also like to mix the honey in warm water to help her drink more water when she’s sick and I got these spoons to help with both mixing into water but also just to give her the honey with and she loves it.  Kids are all about having things their size and these little spoons are perfect for their hands and she loves when I pull out the “honey spoons”.

Mattress wedge:
elevate to help sinuses drain

Everyone who’s been sick knows how awful it is to sleep with a runny nose or when you get the nasal drip into your throat.  Kids definitely don’t know how to deal with that.  Elevating their mattress with a small wedge really helps the sinuses drain and lets them sleep.  I found this mattress wedge that I’m going to try out but you can easily use a rolled up towel or yoga mat under their mattress to give your kids a little bit of elevation to help them out.

Whatever you use, just make sure that you elevate their mattress and not just their pillow. Elevating a pillow can be a lot more uncomfortable and they will most likely just slide off.

The best tool to check for fever

One last tool, I had to mention!  My doctor recommended a forehead thermometer for taking her temperature and this one is great for everyone in the family. It’s easy to read (I love that it gives you a red light to indicate that there indeed is a fever) and it records the last temperatures taken. It can record up to 32 readings!  You always get so worried with kids when they have a fever so it just makes life a lot easier to have a thermometer you can rely on.  With over 500 reviews and a 4.5 star rating, I’m pretty sure other people feel the same as me!

Having a sick child is no fun for anyone.  It usually starts out where my daughter gets sick and then I catch her cold at the tail end of her cold and my husband who is prone to sinus infections, always ends up sick! It just creates this ongoing cycle of one of us always being sick which is rough! Hopefully some of these products/tools help you out as much as they’ve helped out our family.  And hoping that you all get through cold and flu season the best and healthiest that you can!
