The Best Coats to Wear with Dresses

Coats with dresses is one of my go to outfits during the cooler months! I love wearing dresses all year round, but especially figuring out how to wear dresses in the winter! The best thing about cold weather is styling coats and layers. Put them together and you have the most effortlessly stylish and warm look perfect for a cold climate.

Here’s a roundup of all of the different types of coats to wear with dresses to show just how versatile this kind of outfit can be in your wardrobe. These are all stylish outfits that you can wear for fall or winter and for so many different occasions!

The most stylish COATS to wear WITH DRESSES

Whether you are looking for casual outfit inspiration or need a more formal look, a dress with a coat is the most versatile outfit! Here are some of my coat and dress outfits plus some inspiration to inspire you for getting dresses in the cold weather.

Where to shop for coats for all seasons

First thing, I LOVE shopping for coats. I live in Seattle, which means that coats are necessary year round. I wear everything from a winter coat, to an oversized coat to short jackets and I wear them in different ways to get me through the winter months!

Here are the best places to shop for coats and jackets:

Nordstrom – The best place for quality and variety. You can find lots of trendy to classic styles.

J Crew – The best coats for work. If you live in a colder climate and need to commute into work, a warm coat is a must have for winter. J Crew makes the best coats that are great quality and warm.

Walmart – If you are looking for affordable and trendy jackets, Walmart has some great options! I tend to buy a lot of pieces from their “Scoop” brand and have found that the quality to be amazing, especially for the price!

Amazon – one of my favorite coats is from Amazon that I wear all the time! I love that you can find everything on Amazon that is from more affordable brands to higher end brands.

THE BEST COATS TO WEAR WITH DRESSES

#1 Leather Jacket / Moto Jacket

The most worn jacket with dresses? The leather/moto jacket! I love when the temperature drops and I get to [ull out my leather jackets. They always add a bit of edge to my feminine dresses that I just love. They are also so versatile as they can easily be worn day to night.

As seen above I did a mommy and me look with my girls and we paired leopard print dresses with our leather jackets! I love the combination and when worn with sneakers it is casual and cute. I would wear this to run errands, shop or grab lunch!

If you’re looking for outfit ideas for the office, a suede Moto jacket paired with a floral dress is so pretty! It looks stylish and professional all at the same time. Plus, it’s appropriate for happy hour after work – it’s a win, win!

Leather jackets can be easily dressed up when paired with a more formal gown. One year for my holiday photos I paired a pretty red dress with black heels and my leather jacket and I loved out the outfit came together. I felt put together and stylish.

#2 Trench Coat

A trench coat is a true wardrobe staple. They are just as stylish as they are functional for cooler weather and are so fun to style!

I love the idea of belting the trench coat over a classic shirt dress for an ultra chic and feminine look. The cinched waist is ultra flattering on all body times and really accentuates your curves.

#3 Wool Long Coat

No matter the length of your dress, a long wool coat is a great option! They are so cozy, and are a very versatile piece to have in your wardrobe.

I paired my black long coat with a bodycon dress and OTK boots and I felt so comfy and cute! I love the wide lapels on my long coat and the addition of a pin there is so chic and fun.

A wool long coat is also an amazing option for an evening look. I love them worn over a slip dress or party dress.

#4 Blazer

Another wardrobe staple? A blazer! Blazers are so versatile, come in various colors/prints/textures and in varying lengths to really flatter your body type. No matter the type of dress you have, a blazer can always elevate the look!

I paired my go-to black blazer with my floral mini dress and this instantly became my favorite look of the season. Feminine, a bit of edge, and works for so many occasions! It’s also a great way to wear a dress with knee high boots.

I also love the idea of a belted blazer over a dress. This waist belt look works great for midi dresses and can be worn for events, work or a girls night out!

#5 Puffer Coat

If you live in a colder climate, a puffer coat is a MUST HAVE. They are ultra cozy, appropriate for all kinds of weather and in general just so cute!!

You know I’m a sucker for mommy and me outfits so I had to do it!

Here I am matching my mini in our green puffers! I paired mine with a floral dress and OTK boots for a day of running errands.

The thing I love about puffer coats and dresses paired together is you can bring out your summer dresses, or dresses that don’t necessarily have warmer fabrics, and top it with a puffer and you’re still warm!

#6 Faux Fur Coat

If you are heading to a winter wedding with a formal dress code, a cocktail party or any event wearing an evening gown, a faux fur coat is a a great option for you. The look of fur always pairs well with formal wear and instantly elevates any dress.

I love the look of the white slip dress pair with the white faux fur coat for an evening look. This would be so pretty if you are a fall or winter bride for a rehearsal dinner outfit, or as a NYE look!

You can aways style faux fur coats more casually as I did above too! I paired a cute floral dress with black tights and booties, and my faux fur teddy coat was the perfect cozy layer on top.

#7 Denim Jacket

Everyone has a denim jacket in their closet, and it just so happens to be the perfect match over a dress! Whether you have a classic silhouette, oversized fit, or super distressed trendy style, a denim jacket gives the ultimate “cool girl” vibe when paired over a dress.

My daughter and I loved matching our pink dresses with denim jackets! It was the perfect topper to our feminine dresses and gave them more of a relaxed look. One thing I love about denim jackets is that they look great with bright colors too! Don’t be afraid to pair them together for a fun look.

I love the look of graphic tees and graphic tee dresses and I think the edition of an oversized denim jacket really brings this kind of look together. You could recreate the same idea with a classic t-shirt dress, or oversized shirt dress. So many great options!

#8 Camel Coat

Camel coats are super trendy and I really like them as they work with so many different styles. You can layer them over a t-shirt dress for an elevated laid back carpool pick up look, or with a little black dress and you’re ready for date night.

I love to wear sweater dresses during the colder months and they pair so great with a long camel coat! The turtleneck style dress paired with the coat looks so classy and gives it a preppy touch.

#9 Bomber Jacket

Bomber jackets are another great option to pair with jackets. I love the more cropped fit and the edgy feel to them.

A classic knit midi dress is another go-to way that I like to style bomber jackets. When paired with sneakers this is the perfect outfit for running errands!

#10 Short Jacket / Cropped Jacket

Cropped jackets are ultra flattering and look great paired with dresses! They accentuate the waist and show off the dress you’re rocking underneath! You can pretty much find cropped versions of all of the different kinds of coats I listed above.
