Tips to taking the perfect family vacation photos| Our Family Photos in Key West

We made so many great memories on our very first Disney Cruise to the Bahamas and one thing that I knew as soon as I booked the trip was that we needed to do a family photo shoot while on vacation. There’s no hiding that I love photos and I wanted to make sure to capture our very fun trip as well as shoot our baby announcement!

And to make sure that you are prepared for your next vacation, I’ve included my best tips on getting the best family vacation photos that includes choosing your photographer and how to prepare your family for the photos.

Finding the perfect photographer for your vacation

Our first stop on the cruise was Key West and I knew that would be the ideal place for photos! Normally I would ask friends for referrals but since I don’t know anyone in that area, I had to do my own research.

Google is a great jumping off point but I found that the people at the top of the google search ended up being more expensive than I wanted and did not mesh with my style as much. I am thankful that I’m so active on instagram so I could spend a ton of time looking through hashtags and tagged photos of key west in order to find our photographer. Romi was not only so nice but super helpful and offered great tips and suggestions for photos and locations.

How to search for photographers on instagram

On instagram, to easily search for photos use hashtags that are relevant to what you are looking for.  For me, I used #keywest #keywestflorida, #keywestphotographer #keywestweddings (since most wedding photographers will also shoot families) #keywestphotography #keywestfamilyphotos.  I looked through SO many photos to find the style of photography that I loved and then I sent them a DM through instagram to enquire about pricing and availability.  Quite a few were booked as we were traveling at the peak of wedding season for the area but when I asked for referrals or recommendations, everyone was so kind and happy to refer another photographer that might work for us.

Why hire a professional photographer while on vacation?

I am a huge fan of family photos and we do at least 2 photoshoots a year.   Kids grow so fast and I love to look back at our photos and see how much my daughter has grown.

Vacations are especially important for me to have photos and although we take plenty of photos, most of the time it’s either my husband and my daughter, me and my daughter but it’s so hard to get the 3 of us together!  Asking a stranger to take your photo can be risky in that 1) they may run away with your camera or 2) the photo just turns out awful.

The memories we made on the cruise were amazing but having these photos as a keepsake really make it that much more fun to look back on.  We took plenty of candids and fun photos on our own.  And we bought the photo package on the cruise, but these photos we took with our photographer are hands down my favorite photos of the trip and I will always treasure them.

Hiring someone to take your family photos might seem a bit much since you’ll be spending so much on your vacation, but splurging on professional photos while on vacation is 100% worth it to me and something that I purposely save up for!

tips to taking the perfect family vacation photos

TIPS TO TAKING THE PERFECT FAMILY VACATION PHOTOS

  • Find a photographer who is local to the area and has good reviews: Since most family vacations will consist of being in a location you won’t be familiar with, you will need to rely on your photographer to suggest a great location for the photos.  Along with checking out the photographer’s website I also recommend to check their instagram, facebook and any online reviews which will give you a bigger story of their work and if their clients were happy with their photos/service.
  • Coordinate outfits before the trip: when you pack, make sure to note which outfits will be for the photos.  I try to coordinate our outfits with complementing colors and what the background may look like.  I knew we’d be shooting by the beach, but we are not a casual kind of family so I wanted something that would be dressy but also be beach-y.

baby ammouncement family photography tips

  • Prep your family ahead of time: I’m sure you guys know what I mean when you mention family photos to your husband and kids.  It’s definitely not something that excites my husband and although my daughter loves to take photos, an hour of taking photos for a 4 year old is a bit much.  I let them know on multiple occasions exactly what day of our cruise we were dong photos and what I expected out of them.  I swear, setting expectations makes it so much easier for everyone in our family.
  • Do your research and be clear with your photographer on your expectations: I emailed my photographer exactly what kind of photos I was looking for. I had researched the kind of photos that I had seen in Key West that I loved and shared with her what kind of backgrounds and photos I wanted.  I hired her for her photography style so it wasn’t about getting that exact photo as I still wanted her to shoot in her style, but it was more about making sure she knew the kind of backgrounds and poses that I wanted.

Big sister baby announcement ideas

  • Note any special occasions that you want to capture (pack props if necessary):  I was about 4 months along at the time and knew I wanted to announce my baby news with the photos so I let our photographer know that when I booked her.  I had packed a that was easy to pack and blow up.  If you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary, it’s a great excuse to capture the occasion and it’s so easy to pack small props to add to your photos if you want.
  • Schedule and timing: Family photos should not take up more than an hour so it’s not a lot of time to take away from your vacation.  Because we were on a cruise, we also had to adhere to the cruise ship schedule. I had to make sure that timing was right and we would have time to take all the photos I wanted.  We had selected 2 locations and then I wanted to make sure to get some photos of us with the cruise ship as the background so I made sure to stay on top of timing while at the shoot.

Family Friendly Hotel in Miami South Beach

As you may know, we recently went on our first Disney Cruise which we LOVED!  I’m planning on doing a post to cover the cruise but first had to share one of our favorite parts of our trip where we spent a fun day in Miami!  Where to stay in Miami South Beach

FAMILY FRIENDLY HOTEL MIAMI SOUTH BEACH

Flying from Seattle to Miami is extremely hard to find direct flights as we are flying all the way to the opposite end of the US!  I could not find flights that would match up with the cruise schedule. We decided to stay an extra day in Miami so we could avoid the stress of having to catch a flight too early or too late.  We booked a room at the beautiful Washington Park Hotel in South Beach and it was the perfect family friendly hotel in Miami!

I’ve only been to Miami for girl’s trips so was not sure how family friendly it would be but we were pleasantly surprised when we got to the hotel and found not only gorgeous rooms but great amenities as well!

Where to stay after Disney Cruise

BRIGHT AND MODERN ROOMS

The rooms were really bright and spacious so the three of us had plenty of room to stretch out.  I loved the decor and the photography/art around the hotel was beautiful.

We had gotten off the cruise early in the morning and took a Lyft directly to the hotel, which was only about a 15-20 minute ride.

Family Friendly Hotel Miami South Beach

The hotel is separated into a few buildings and all of them are unique and so pretty!  I just love the architecture in Miami, it’s so different than what I’m used to here in the pacific northwest. The whole property is definitely instagram worthy.

COOLING DOWN BY THE POOL

We spent a little time by the pool but my daughter who doesn’t love being hot (hello, true seattleite!) didn’t want to stay out in the sun, so we just dipped our toes in the pool and then sat under the umbrellas.

Where to stay in Miami South Beach

Since we had gotten up so early to disembark from the cruise, the room was such a great space to just relax and rest.  Layla got to take a nice long nap while my husband and I just laid next to her to rest our heads and watch some TV.

SWIZZLE TROPICAL COCKTAIL BAR

We walked down to their in house restaurant and got burgers for lunch. Don’t let the name fool you as it’s got a great menu for adults and kids.  I was so hungry and ate my entire burger, it was delicious!  I’m always a little weary of hotel food but this restaurant really knows what they are doing.  Everything was delicious.  I wanted a frozen fruity drink and the bartender made me something that wasn’t on the menu and it was so good, I had two!

FREE SHUTTLE TO THE BEACH

We were too tired to take advantage of their free shuttle that takes you to the beach but next time I go I’m definitely going to take it. Check out how cute it is!

Thank you so much to Washington Park Hotel for the stay, we will definitely be back!

Where to stay in Vegas ( that’s not on the strip!) – Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa Review

My sister and I were invited to speak on the panel at the Women Who Slay event in Las Vegas and we were hosted by the  which was such a fabulous hotel.  Just wanted to share my review and thoughts on our stay as well as some of the fun stuff we got to do! Also if you want some recommendations of what to do and eat in Vegas, scroll down to the bottom of the post!

Red Rock Casino Resort and Spa

I’ve been to Vegas, a lot.  I think this was my 12th time being there.  And I’ve always stayed on the strip so this is the first time not being on the strip but it was absolutely what I needed.  If you haven’t been to Vegas before, staying on the strip is a no brainer!  You definitely have to experience it once in your life. But if you are a frequent visitor, a place like the Red Rock Resort is a great option.  It was about a half hour from the strip which was an easy uber/taxi ride for when we did go out at night but we just stayed at the hotel during the day relaxing by the pool and eating all the food!

FAMILY FRIENDLY HOTEL IN LAS VEGAS

I mean how could we not sit by the pool all day?  Look how gorgeous it is! And I didn’t get a great photo of all the pools but instead of one gigantic pool like a lot of hotels have, they have one larger one with the fountain (which is great spot for the kids!) and then lots of smaller size pools all around so that not one pool was ever super crowded.

PLENTY OF UNCROWDED POOLS

Here’s a view below of one of the smaller pools and as you can see that was pretty much the extent of how many people were in the pool. It was always less than 10 people which was so nice as I could get into the pool and not feel like I was sitting in a crowd of people which I’ve actually done many times in the pools at other Vegas hotels.
There were also plenty of chairs and you didn’t have to do that ridiculous thing of getting at the pool super early just to put your towel down and save your spot. It was super hot when we were there, well in the 100’s and this Seattle girl thinks 85 is hot so I was dying but I still wanted to be outside as much as I could so getting a chair and then taking a dip in the pool every once in awhile was the perfect day for me.
I was also so excited to spend some sister time.  We both had invited friends to come along but both unfortunately had family emergencies and could not make it last minute. We were sad that they couldn’t make it but we had a great time together!
We will for sure be back with our little ones as we saw so many families with kids and they all looked like they were having so much fun.

DELICIOUS FOOD BY THE POOL

I ate by the pool all 3 days I was there.  I loved it! The food was so good!  Still thinking about the avocado toast and mango margarita.

Another one of our pool lunches.  Obviously we were so hungry look at all that food for the two of us!  But everything was so fresh and delicious.

TWO BEDROOM SUITE

My photos of the room didn’t turn out great, but they put us in a two bedroom suite with a sitting area in between.  It was beautiful and perfect for what we needed.  The rooms were fairly large and the beds were very comfy.
Wifi that worked great both in the rooms and in the public areas.  Oh and we got room service every morning (I mean nothing better than when you had stayed out until 3AM the night before, right?).  We were so happy with the service everywhere!
.

 FLAMINGO ROMPER

WOMEN WHO SLAY EVENT

At the Women Who Slay event (more on that later) they had a VIP section set up for all of us so we got to enjoy this nice private pool and cabana section.  We had a lot of fun taking pics with the floaties 🙂

DEMI LOVATO PRIVATE PARTY

My sister had been invited to the Demi Lovato song release party for her Sorry Not Sorry song and she got me and a friend (who happened to be in Vegas at the same time) in as well.  We had SO much fun and it was fun to see Demi sing her song. We had no idea that there would be a surprise guest so when they announced Nick Jonas I lost it and screamed like a little girl. LOL! I’m not a crazy fan,  I actually only know a few of his songs but still the guy can bring out the 13 year old in me.

I’m wearing the Star Lace Dress

NOBU HOTEL

The party was on the penthouse of the Nobu hotel which was cool to see as well and had such a great view of the strip!  Anyway if you want to see more, especially the rooms at Red Rock Casino (and the Nick and Demi appearance) check out my video that I posted to my facebook page!

TOP THINGS TO DO AND PLACES TO EAT ON THE LAS VEGAS STRIP

If you are visiting Vegas, here are a few of my favorite things to do:

The Cosmopolitian – one of my favorite hotels.  I stayed there not too long ago and the rooms are huge and gorgeous.  The best part of the hotel, is that they have some of the best restaurants. We never had to leave the hotel to eat! You definitely need to check out:
China Poblano – a mix of chinese and mexican food which is so unexpected but done so well.
Momofuku – Yes they finally have one in Vegas!  Don’t miss out on the world famous Pork Belly Buns!
Zuma – We just went on this trip and the food was exceptional.  I love Japanese food and could eat it every day if it didn’t cost an arm and a leg! The food was expensive but I also felt like it was a fair amount for what we paid for.

More to do:
Nobu – I’m a sushi lover and have tried a ton of sushi restaurants in Vegas but Nobu will always be a favorite. I’ve only been to the one in the Hard Rock Hotel but there’s also one in Ceasar’s Palace (which is where the Nobu hotel is)
Forum Shops at Caesar’s Palace – I love shopping here, so many good shops and it’s just a fun environment!  Don’t miss out on the Gucci store, it’s gorgeous and right now Gucci is killing it.  I wanted to buy everything in the store!
Bellagio – Go there to see the flower garden and the fountain but also the shopping.  Well to tell you the truth, I mainly just go there to drool at the Chanel store but still a fun place to shop!
Britney Spears – I saw her show about a year ago and even though she lip syncs, the show is still really fun.  I like the Vegas venues as they are so much smaller than if they were actually touring and your seats are so high that you can barely see them.  I loved the show and would totally go watch her again!  I also  REALLY want to see the Backstreet Boys in Vegas.  They weren’t performing the week I was there or else I totally would have bought tickets to their show.

My Week in Chicago: T&J Designs Holiday Party, Foodie Adventures and Lots of Fun!

My daughter and I just got back from Chicago and I’m so happy that we
left right before all the snow!  Man is it cold there!  People are
always asking me how I can stand the rain in Seattle but I would much
rather take the rain than the freezing cold temps and snow.  I’m such a
chicken when it comes to cold, I just can’t handle it!  Other than the
cold, our week in Chicago was so much fun.  I
love visiting my sister and her boys and love having my daughter spend
time with her cousins since she doesn’t get to seem them that often.

 COAT // CARDIGAN // SHIRT // JEANS // BOOTIES // HAT // SUNGLASSES

Just a quick review of all the fun stuff we did!

We started out with blowouts at Blowout Junkie.  I got the “Signature” and Jen got the “Junkie Wave” Mine looks quite big and the curls are super tight because it was just done but in the next few hours my hair relaxed a bit and I had really pretty big curls and lots of volume, I really loved it!

After the blowouts we had to run around to do a few things and while we were out, we found this fun black and white wall.  Of course, we stopped for a photo 🙂 We are unapologetically fashion bloggers who can’t pass up a good wall!

The rest of the day was busy with work and getting ready for our annual T&J Designs holiday party!  Every year, we hold a party at a fun venue and invite our favorite Chicago bloggers and local customers to come eat, drink and shop with us!  This year was at Siena Tavern and it was amazing!  I always have so much fun meeting everyone and seeing familiar faces and I love seeing everyone shop!  It’s just such a fun way to connect with everyone, especially since we are mainly ecommerce so it’s so hard for people to see our line in person and I just love seeing everyone’s reactions when they see it.

JEN’S DRESS // MY TOP AND SKIRT

The next day my sister, our social media assistant and I went out to lunch at Restoration Hardware.  The restaurant is actually called 3 Arts Club Cafe but it’s located inside RH (which is actually the historic Three Arts Club building).  The food was delish!  Everything is beautifully styled, the space is just gorgeous. And yes it’s the same furniture store that you all know but this one is SO much more. The main floor is the restaurant and all the floors upstairs is where you can shop but it’s nothing like the restoration hardware that I’m used to.  Every room is just gorgeous and you want to buy everything!  It’s definitely a must see when you are in Chicago.  I wish I had taken photos but just now realized that I put everything on my insta-stories which disappears and I forgot to save them!  (Follow me on Instagram @tiffanyish so you don’t miss my other adventures!)
I grabbed this pic from the 3 Arts Club Cafe restaurant as you just have to see how pretty it is!
The restaurant is in the Gold Coast neighborhood of Chicago where every home is gorgeous.  We couldn’t resist and had to take photos in front of this pretty house!

After lunch we went back to work and played with the kids before our next event!

My sister got invited to a private dinner back at Siena Tavern with Chef Fabio Viviani, which you may know from Top Chef.  She got me on the invite list as well and I was super excited!  It was a very small group, I think 13 of us in a small room and because he was introducing his new venture, Lobster by Fabio, we were treated to the most amazing 6 course lobster dinner.  I’m not kidding when I say that this was one of the best meals of my entire life.  I love lobster.  Like LOVE it.  So having lobster prepared 6 different ways was heaven for me.  I insta-storied the entire thing but I did capture this photo of one of the dishes.    He also has his own wine so we had wine pairings with everything.  Suffice to say, I went home very full and very happy.

Fabio was very sweet and I have to admit I loved listening to him talk about all the dishes in his very cute accent 🙂

MY DRESS AND BOOTS // JEN’S TOP

We went home that night and passed out from the food coma!  All the other times not pictured were spent with our kids or working!  It was such a wonderful week though and was so happy to spend a lot of time with my sister.  I always love getting to spend time with her and my nephews.  Family is everything and the older I get, the more I appreciate every moment I get to spend with them.

Lookbook: Silverlake Heart Stairs

I was traveling all last week, first in San Francisco and then in LA.  We have a lot of fun and exciting things coming up for my business, t+j Designs so we were there for business and had meetings upon meetings every day.  Being with my sister who’s also a blogger, we of course made some time in between meetings to get some pictures in!

Crystal had written about the best photo backdrops in LA a few months ago and after I read it, I knew I had to visit these heart stairs in Silverlake! If you want to look for them, the real name is the “Micheltorena Stairs”  We stayed in downtown LA and it only took us about 15 minutes to get to there. If you want to know more about Silverlake, Crystal wrote a fab post about the area as well. It was such a beautiful day but not many people around.  We took photos for about 15 minutes and only one other person came up to take photos as well.

WHAT I’M WEARING

It was such a great trip but after a full week away and it being my second trip in less than 2 months away from my daughter and husband, I am so happy to be back home!  We tried to take lots of pics whenever we were out so hopefully I will get some more posts up with our adventures.  And you can always follow me on instagram for a sneak peek of photos before they hit the blog.

Packing Tips!

When I was in my early twenties, I was a chronic over packer. I think every time I went on a trip with girlfriends we’d try to “out shoe” each other.  Meaning “How many shoes did you bring?” “You brought 5?  I brought 7!”  LOL!  But in recent years, I’ve had to travel a lot more for work and packing for work travel (which you don’t want to be lugging around a huge suitcase when doing multi-city stops with your boss) has helped me figure out ways to help make packing easier so thought I’d share my method with you guys!

packing3packingpacking2
packing5packing4

I’m a super organized traveler so as you can see from my photos, everything has it’s own pouch or case.
The Tools:
  • A good sturdy suitcase – Mine is a Tumi roller (similar here) that is carry on size but roomy enough for a 5 day trip as well.  I’ve had it for I think 5 years now and it’s incredible how much it’s been through yet nothing is broken.  Zippers still work perfectly, the wheels run smoothly and the handle isn’t wobbly.  Although expensive, this suitcase was worth every penny.  Luggage is one of those things that I truly believe that you should invest in if you travel a lot.  I also love that mine is a rare pink that you never see.  I try to do carry on most of the time but the times that I check my bag, I never have trouble spotting my pink luggage!
  • Packing Cubes – These are amazing for someone that loves organization.  I put all of my clothes into one by rolling everything (rolling helps with wrinkles) and the other ones I put in my delicates (undies, sleepwear, workout clothes) and the last one is miscellaneous but I usually keep my toiletry bag, curling iron or flat iron (only one, never both), makeup brush pouch and ipod speakers in there.  You know how sometimes you forget something and you need to dig into your suitcase to get it and then it ruins your packing job?  With packing cubes, you never have that problem.  You just find the one you put it in and pull it out without ruining everything else.  Then when you pack all the cubes, they just fit together into the suitcase.  There is no sitting on the suitcase to get it closed.  It just fits!
  • Shoe bags – You don’t have to worry about getting anything dirty or anything scratching your shoes.
  • Jewelry Pouch – My mother in law bought me a whole travel bag set for my birthday a few years ago and this jewelry pouch was included and is my favorite.  Unfortunately I don’t know the brand of it but this one looks really nice as well.  It has compartments for all my jewelry and even a neat little roll that you can slip your rings on.  None of my jewelry ever has to get tangled together and it’s so easy to see what I brought.
  • Laptop Case – If you get a slim one like mine and keep nothing else in it, you can take it through security without taking it out of it’s case.  (Don’t hold me to it though, TSA gets picky, but most let me take it through w/o taking it out.)  Pack the laptop case last (right on top of the packing cubes) for easy access to pull it out when you get to security.  (Mine is by Knomo and you can find a similar style here or here.  Mine is a few years old so they don’t make this color/style anymore.)

What I pack:

  • Check the weather before you go: I bring clothes for the climate but knowing that I often get cold, I always bring an extra cardigan and scarf just in case.  I like Accuweather because it has the temperature but also the “RealFeel” temperature which when you see 78 degrees but “RealFeel” 100 degrees than you know you really don’t need to bring that extra cardigan!
  • Keep it in the same color family: I always try to take basics like black pants, dark skinny jeans and things that mix and match with similar tones or patterns.  I never pack “outfits” meaning “these pants go with this top and these shoes” because that always fails for me.  Inevitably I don’t feel like wearing that outfit that I packed and I don’t feel as comfortable that day.
  • The essential shoes (only!): I don’t go overboard with shoes now because shoes are bulky and take up too much space.  I always always bring 1 pair of flats that will go with every outfit and 1 pair of heels that will go easily from office to dinner.  The shoes that I wear on the plane are usually either my bulkiest shoes (like boots that would be hard to pack) or heels that are a good alternative to the black ones in case I don’t feel like wearing black.
  • Cosmetics bag: Because I travel a lot and I hated packing and repacking all the same makeup essentials, I bought two of everything I use a lot and keep one set in my travel cosmetics bag at all times.  That way there is no way I can forget my favorite eyeliner or blush, which I always used to do.  I do the same with my makeup brushes and have a set that I only use for travel.  I use this Vera Bradley one because it’s roomy and lined in plastic so it can be cleaned easily when makeup breaks or spills (which inevitably it does, I had eyeshadows shatter and the whole inside was covered in brown and gold eyeshadow but with water it cleaned right off.)
  • Extras to make your trip easier: iPod speakers (when I travel alone, it gets lonely and I’m not a TV watcher so prefer music),  I use this one which you can connect your iPod and iPhone to.  A power strip – yes, a power strip.  How many times have you looked around a hotel  room for an electrical outlet only to find one that is easy to plug into, but you have 3 things to charge?  It doesn’t add too much weight to bring one and when I travel with the hubs we never have to fight for who gets to charge what first.  This is especially helpful when traveling to a tropical city where it’s more of a touristy destination and they don’t think about outlets like business hotels do.  For photographers, this was super handy for us because charging DSLR batteries takes up an outlet for a long time!  Room Spray: (Keep this in your baggy of liquids that you have to take out at security) I know I’m not the only one that hates the smell of most hotel rooms!  I am a fan of these Bath and Body Works room sprays.  Small and compact and last a long time.

What to carry on:

  • My carry on bag is usually either my matching Tumi overnight bag (similar here) that I keep my purse in along with everything else, or on shorter trips, I just carry a purse like my Louis Vuitton Neverfull that can carry a good amount of stuff.
  • A tote like the Neverfull (I also use the Rebecca Minkoff Cherish tote) is pretty much my go to for work trips as it holds my files, laptop charger, mouse, etc… pretty easily.  For non-work trips where I know I’ll be walking around a lot and taking pictures, I usually bring a cross body bag.  My Marc by Marc Jacobs bag is a fave for travel.
  • Things that I keep in my purse: my jewelry pouch, wallet, iPhone, iPod, Nook (I have the old Nook but the new color Nook is awesome!), magazines and a small cosmetics pouch that I keep a mirror, blush/blush brush, lipstick and eyeliner in for touch ups when you land and there’s no time to go to the hotel to freshen up.  Oh and of course a scarf because I’m always cold!
  • If I bring my iPad, I keep it there as well but I never bring both my laptop and iPad.  It’s overload and I already carry too much.
  • And of course my camera if I bring it.  When I bring my DSLR, I keep the camera body and lens in their own pouches.  Not only does it protect it better, they are easier to carry and less bulky as two separate parts than one gigantic, awkward shape.

I took those photos in a hotel room packing to come home so you can see that I really do pack like that on every trip! 🙂

p.s. If you are wondering what luggage we used to transport our camera equipment for our photography jobs, we use this titan luggage and a lot of custom cut foam padding!  Hubs sometimes would also double pack the cameras into this Crumpler bag to make it that much safer.
