Key Details to Consider Before Planning Outfits for Photos

  • Season – Time of year plays a roll in the weather and of course you want all outfits to be weather appropriate, especially if you are outside
  • Location – The location of your photos is important for multiple reasons. Will you be inside or outside? Outfits will differ depending on this detail. Also, what will your “backdrop” look like? You want to stand out and not blend in to the background, but also wear something appropriate to fit the style and theme of the place
  • Occasion – Are you mailing out themed holiday cards, or planning to frame these in your home? Keep this in mind while planning your outfits so it feels appropriate
  • Color Palette – The color scheme is also important for many reasons and different factors will alter this. Be sure to consider your backdrop/location and the season/occasion. Whether it be neutral tones, bright colors or soft pastels, you of course will want the colors/hues that flatter all of the members of your family, and that coordinate well together

8 Outfit Theme Ideas to Wear for Spring Pictures:

My girls and I take photos all of the time, so I rounded up some of my favorites of all of our Spring themed looks to share a bunch of ideas and inspiration for outfit themes for your next Spring pictures. Keep in mind that these outfits can work no matter how many people are in your group.

For Spring pictures especially, I love to focus on fun colors and that compliment gorgeous nature scenes in the background. The Spring season is the best time to get outside and as the temperatures rise it is the perfect time to embrace the new season.

#1 All One Color

A really popular theme for family pictures is to coordinate the color scheme and all wear one color! This is a great choice if you have lots of family members to coordinate as it makes it easy and instantly gives a cohesive feel.

lavender outfit ideas

As you can see below, my girls and I did a Spring photoshoot and all wore lavender. This is a color we all love and feels festive and appropriate for the Spring season. Choose whatever color that you &/or your family loves and work around that! It is totally okay if the shades are slightly off, it will still look great all together in the photos.

#2 Mixed Prints

A great way to highlight individual family members personalities is to go for a mixed print theme! As seen below, I wore florals and my daughters wore polka dots. Because their dresses were multi-colored and mine was mostly pink, they still complimented each other even though we did not match perfectly.

My best advice if you want to try the mixed prints route, is to find prints that don’t compete with each other but compliment each other. You can do this by mixing different textures, finding colors that compliment each other and not having too many different contrasting colors in one group.

#3 Bright Colors

In my mind, Spring = bright and fun happy colors! A good pop of color always comes across great on film, and is perfectly festive for the Spring season. Bright colors add life to the photo and give a great focal point. They also look fantastic against natural elements, such as trees/florals if you are outside!

As seen below, my girls and I rocked bright pinks and their dresses featured rainbow colors. You could do this same idea with a pastel palette as well which would be gorgeous for a Spring theme. Whether you prefer warmer tones or lighter colors, focusing on mixing colors that compliment each other is the best way to get that cohesive look and bring together the entire family.

#4 Spring Florals

Florals for Spring are a timeless feel that are always so fun. My girls and I actually wore matching floral dresses in our photo below which I really loved, but you don’t have to be exactly matching to do this outfit theme!

As much as I love matching mommy and me outfits, you could mix and match different florals that have similar color palettes, and for the men in your life you could do floral printed boy’s shirts to keep the theme going.

When it comes to florals, I like to focus on prints that feel soft and pretty as opposed to looking too busy or bold. The florals should add an element to the overall theme but not overtake it. This is one of my top tips when it comes to wearing a matching print for the whole family.

#5 Casually Coordinated

I love our casual photo shoots just as much as our dressed up ones, as we are typically in casual wear and these photoshoots always seem to capture us in our natural element. For spring photos and a casual spring themed outfit, denim and feminine detailed tees are the perfect go to! My girls wore little button front skirts with ruffled sleeved tops in light colors, and I wore my favorite distressed denim and puffed sleeved tee. These elevated basics are perfect for the Spring season and all look great together even though they are not exactly the same.

#6 Gingham

Gingham is a very popular print for Spring and I absolutely love the way it looks it photographs. We did a yellow gingham theme as shown below and they are truly some of our favorite photos we have! I love the visual interest that this print brings and that is feels so classic and timeless. This is also an easy print for everyone in the family to wear. Whether its a fully printed dress, or just a printed pocket square in dads blazer – this print can be sprinkled throughout the group to create a cohesive feel.

#7 Dressed Up + Denim

My go to outfit in the Spring is a pretty Spring dress + a denim jacket. It’s the perfect layer for the season, and makes sense for almost every occasion. Take this approach to your next family photo session and you have the perfect effortlessly stylish spring pictures outfit.

As seen below, my daughter and I wore pleated pink skirts, t-shirts and denim jackets in our family photoshoot. I loved that we were fully matching – even down to our purse! You could create this same look with a flowy dress, or cute wide leg pants and a tank with a denim jacket on top.
