T&J Designs is closing… now what?

Last Friday my sister and I announced that we were closing T&J Designs, the clothing and jewelry line and ecommerce shop that we created over 7 years ago and put our heart and souls into.  I had so many of you reach out through instagram DMs to share your stories of what you bought from us, your favorite items and so many kind notes of support.  I appreciate them so much and we would never have gotten to where we are without all of our amazing customers and friends.  I still remember the moment my family and I decided to start this business, and how exciting the day of our launch was.

Why we closed T&J Designs

A lot of you also wondered what had happened and why we decided to close the business. My sister wrote a really great post that summarized our journey from beginning to end.  It truly has been an amazing ride, to starting our company with $5,000 to design our website and fly to China to start our jewelry collection. Getting on the Today show, that helped bring the company to the next level, to making over $1 million dollar in sales to creating our own clothing line to being accepted into 500 startups and traveling to Silicon Valley every week for 4 months. We’ve been through so much and now that I write it out, I almost can’t even believe it!

Head over to Jen’s post to read about our journey. I don’t want to repeat all the details here, but I did want to offer my perspective as my sister and I had differing circumstances at the end of our journey that helped us both know that it was the right choice for us to close down the business.

What it takes to run a fashion business

When I tell people that I own a clothing and jewelry line the first response is usually “Oh that must be so fun!” and it was indeed fun but the part that everyone thinks about, designing the clothing and jewelry was a small part of the business.

The tee shirt that started our clothing line

The rest of the time was spent marketing (social media, email newsletters, getting more subscribers, facebook ads, etc…) packing and shipping (we usually had a team of 4-5 people doing this), inventory management (which is a whole beast in itself), customer service – returns, exchanges, complaints, questions… (this takes up more time than you can imagine), shooting the products, updating/managing our website, managing our factories in China, and of course just all the general duties of owning your own business and managing a team of 10-12 people.

Within 2 years of starting our business, we began to wholesale our line which grew to around 200 accounts. Wholesale, in itself is a whole different business than the e-commerce side. We were doing tradeshows, had account reps and showrooms so we were basically running two huge businesses at once.

Basically we were doing all of this for 6+ years which meant we were all working 12-14 hours every single day.  And don’t even get me started on holiday season where we worked around the clock from September/October until December.  And oh yeah, in between all of this, I got pregnant and had my first baby and my sister had two babies!

The (non) balance of being a mom and entrepreneur

We were busier than ever, and looking back at it, I loved it. I loved that we were so busy and our company was able to grow so fast.  My parents have been involved since day 1 and I loved being able to work together as a family. But when you own your own company, the hardest part is to stop working. I worked all the time and when I wasn’t working, I was thinking about the business and it just never left my mind. it took a toll on my health both physically and mentally.  My husband saw how it wore me down, he encouraged me to take days off, he encouraged me to go to yoga and do the things that I loved and just get some “me time.” He saw me through some of my worst anxiety attacks and even now, even though I haven’t had one in years, he still checks in on me and my mental state just to make sure that I don’t reach that point again.

In between the business, my husband and my daughter, I wanted to make sure that everyone was taken care of and I just never made the time for myself.  I never wanted the business to affect my daughter so I always gave her my full attention whenever she was with me.  This meant giving up a lot of regular working hours and only working after she had gone to bed so I ended up working until 2-3am on most days and waking up early before she woke up.

But don’t get me wrong, it was not all like this.  I never once regretted leaving my corporate job to start my own business.  I was so much happier than I ever had been. I loved that I was able to control my schedule and allowed me the freedom to spend time with my daughter.  I loved connecting with customers through social media and email.  I loved seeing our designs come to life and see how our customers wore them.  The rewards of owning your business are endless and I will always be an entrepreneur because of that.

And then came the question of baby #2

I had always hesitated about having a 2nd child but it slowly crept up on me as I watched my daughter grow, that I really wanted a sibling for her.  I have 2 amazing siblings that I adore and I just couldn’t imagine her growing up without a brother or a sister. For 5 years, my business was my 2nd child, I gave it as much attention as much as I did my daughter and because of that, I always knew that it would be very hard for me to have a 2nd child, while still running T&J Designs. It really hit me at the end of 2016 that I just knew it was time to expand my family but I questioned how I was going to do that amidst everything else I had going on in my life.

As my sister mentioned in her post, 2017 was a tough year for us and it was definitely hard on me because I felt like I was on a timeline to be able to get pregnant and have my 2nd. My parents, sister and I knew that this was the year where something had to be done so we looked at our numbers, we looked at our 5 year plan and made a decision. We could have continued and created more products and both my sister and I had grown an instagram following that really helped with our business.  But, knowing how much work we had all been doing and everything else that was going on in our personal lives, we realized what was realistic for all of us and it was time to slow down the business.  For me, it was time for me to concentrate on my family and hopefully expand our little family! I was lucky in that I got pregnant very quickly and found out early 2018 that I was expecting our 2nd!

What’s next for T&J Designs

We will no longer be selling on our website but we will still have our wholesale open to a few select accounts.  We also currently sell wholesale through Poshmark who has been an amazing partner for the past 5 years.  Our inventory will be much smaller and my mom and dad will be running that business with the occasional help from me and my sister.  My dad has been an entrepreneur all his life and he refuses to “retire” as he loves to work. Having a much smaller scale of T&J Designs is perfect for him and my mom where he is still able to work but not have to be at an office full time and allows him to play as much golf as he wants! 🙂

What’s next for me

mommy and kids hanna andersson pajamas

I think most of you know that in 2018 I transitioned to be a full time blogger/content creator.  I feel extremely lucky to have been able to transition into this new career.  I will have another post soon with more details on my journey as I get a lot of questions about how I did this! My sister has done the same through her blog and instagram and I love that we can continue to share in the same journey together. Even though we don’t technically work together on the same business anymore, having her in the same industry has been immensely helpful.

Last year was so much change where we moved to a new house, had a baby and changed careers but I couldn’t have asked for anything better. I still own a business, it’s just a different kind of business but it has allowed me to stay at home with baby Edie just as I did with Layla.  My husband gets to see a lot more of me and I truly love what I do. I get to work with brands that I never dreamed of working with and now that my daughter is more involved with my instagram, I basically get paid to spend time with my girls!

I never really saw this as the end of T&J designs as that business opened up so many doors and helped me learn so much that has brought me to this stage in life.  I just see it as a continuation of what I was doing but just a different variation of it.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU

Life Lately

It’s been crazy around here guys… Not much time to blog at all.  With me getting over the flu, my business at it’s peak busy season, being nanny-less for 2.5 weeks and my daughter, who has always been a great sleeper (she started sleeping through the night at 10 weeks old) has now at 16 months become unable to sleep without me being there right next to her and oh yeah, she refuses to fall asleep until 12am!  I’m working through it all and figuring things out as they come but I can not wait to resume back to “normal” life.

If you follow me on instagram, you’ll get a more up to date glimpse of what’s going on with me.  If you don’t follow me yet, here’s a few photos of what I’ve been up to!  While in Chicago my sister took me to a fabulous party hosted by Debi Lilly at her new event space, DL Loft.  The space was beautiful and it was such a fun party to attend.  I finally got a chance to wear the Altuzarra for Target dress that I wrote about back in September when the collection came out.

My sister and I at the holiday party/event that we hosted at Nellcote for our jewelry line.  It was such a fun night of shopping, food and drinks.  So many people came, which made us very happy!  It was at one point so packed that I couldn’t even walk to one end of our table to the other.  We met lots of new and old customers which is the best part!  The dress I’m wearing is by Missguided.  My pearls are here and you can find my sister’s pearls here and her red maxi skirt is also our design!
Before leaving Chicago my sister and I took a much needed break and did a little shopping.  This Valentino Red coat caught my eye and although I didn’t buy it, it’s still on my mind.  I must order it soon.

I always miss my daughter so much when I travel, especially now so that she’s starting to talk and recognize things, I feel like I’m missing out whenever she learns a new word and I’m not there to hear it!  I always make sure to take her on fun outings, just her and I, so when I got home I took her out and we wore our matching glitter shoes. 🙂 Mine are from Target and hers are from Nordstrom but I got them during the summer so both are sold out.

I had one healthy day (see above photo) after I got back and then I got hit with the flu super hard.  The fatigue is the worst!  For someone that goes a million miles an hour (I’m never bored and I’m never without a hundred things on my to do list) to be stuck in bed with the inability to do anything about it was the absolute worst.  The week before, I had planned on my outfit for my husband’s company dinner, which included these gorgeous Wolford tights and our bejeweled clutch.  I was very excited to get to wear my new sparkly tights!  I really tried to get better, but the night of the party, I never ended up making it out of bed.  🙁

I’m finally feeling better now, thank goodness!  Before I got sick, I hit up some online shopping pretty hard for presents and of course ended up picking up some goodies for myself (Merry Christmas to me from me!).  It’s always fun to get presents in the mail isn’t it? 🙂  Here’s some of my haul…

Valentino flats | Memebox x Chosungah Peachy Glow Pact | NYX Lip Creams
Too Faced Blush | Clinique eyeshadow palette | C Wonder makeup bag

Hope you guys are all surviving the holidays and not too many of you caught the flu too!  Happy Holidays!

Life Lately

Life has been super crazy lately and so posting on the blog will be sporadic but I’m still here and wanted to say hi!  Just an update and sharing photos from my instagram.  If you don’t follow me yet, you can follow me here!

Cherishing the moments of being able to take long walks with our dogs.  (I’m almost 23 weeks here but I’m 24 weeks now!).  Wearing a Forever 21 Dress

Last
week was a bit tough for me because of the pregnancy.  Even though I
still don’t look very pregnant (you should see the surprised looks I
get all the time when people find out I’m 6 months pregnant).  The
weight that I have gained has all gone to my boobs and my belly and all
that weight in front is killing my back.  Sleep has been tough, sitting
on the couch has been tough, walking has been tough, etc… and I’ve
been a little unhappy about it all.  My super sweet husband has been
giving me daily massages and putting up with my sh*t and he also got me a
little gift to cheer me up.  I love the bow clutch that he picked out
for me.  I just love that he went shopping on his own and picked it
out for me as I’ve never even seen or mentioned this clutch to him
before but when I saw it, it was so me, and I love that he knows that
about me.  It doubles as a crossbody and has a bow print that you can see on the back.

I had a really great weekend celebrating mother’s day with my mom.  Being pregnant has really made me appreciate everything that my mom has done for me and I’m so glad to be so close by and be able to see her whenever I want!

Our business is really taking off, so much so that we got a new office and are in the process of moving!  It’s such exciting times to see our little business turn into everything we’ve envisioned (I mean we are not there quite yet but in less than 2 years, we’ve had amazing growth.) and having a team of people work for us.  We’re also growing so rapidly that we’ve just hired two more people on our shipping team along with the merchandising intern that my sister is hiring.  Such crazy fun times and I’m loving every minute of it!

Some new bracelets we added to our collection:  Chain Bangle | Pave Bracelet | Enamel Bracelet
We added watches to our designs and I LOVE them!!  The Gold Link & Tortoise watch is my favorite and is selling like crazy.  The colored watches will be on our site in a little bit.  We are still perfecting a few things with the designs on those but get excited because they will be gorgeous!

And then, my husband and I bought a house!  We just closed yesterday and am so in love with our new home.  It’s so us and will be perfect for when the baby is here.  So now along with the move for the new office, I have to move our old house into our new house which is quite a daunting task especially because oh yeah, I’m 6 months pregnant and will be 7 months by the time we move everything all in.  Yikes!  So all in all, it’s quite an exciting few months for us and I’m sure will be for the next few months and then before I know it the baby will be here.  I’m actually more scared for that part than anything else!  LOL!  I hope you all are having a great week!

My little secret…

I’ve been keeping a lil secret that I can finally reveal!

I’m pregnant!

The baby is due in September and I’m about 4.5 months now.  We will be finding out the sex of the baby soon so we’re very excited for that.  Not much will change with the blog except I’m sure you’ll be seeing my growing bump in lookbooks.  My husband and I are excited for this next little adventure in our lives and thank you guys for always being so supportive and reading along with my blog!

My Loves

My husband and I are approaching our 5 year wedding anniversary so I wanted to capture some photos of us together as we haven’t had any since we got married!  Our dogs are such a big part of our lives that I wanted to make sure that we got some photos with them too.  Husband is not too fond of being on the blog (he’s not an internet guy at all, he doesn’t have a facebook or anything even social media related – the exact opposite of me!) but I had to post these pics because I adore him, adore us and adore our little family.  I can’t help but just feel so happy and lucky when I see these pictures.

photos by Miguel Marino

What I’m wearing

First outfit:
Zara Blazer (similar) | J Crew Blouse | Madewell Jeans | Rag & Bone Booties (similar)
Second outfit:
Forever 21 Blazer (similar) | Shop Sosie Blouse (similar) | Juicy Couture dress (worn as a skirt) | DKNY tights | YSL Heels

I wanted photos that captured us but I also wanted to avoid the “engagement” shoot look.  Since my husband and I used to be wedding photographers we’ve taken more than our fair share of engagement photos and when you’re shooting a couple it’s easy to kind of fall back into that look and feel .  Our photographer really worked with us to get the kind of shots we wanted.  I’m very happy with the way they turned out.  If you are in Seattle and looking for a photographer, I highly recommend to contact Miguel! (In fact, you might already read his wife’s blog, the lovely Carolyn.  I adore them both!)

Links to start out a great 2013

This year has been amazing.  I am so thankful for the wonderful people that I have in my life, the amazing opportunities that have come my way and just being HAPPY all the time.  After being continually sick for the past few years (and finally, FINALLY! just recently figuring out why I was sick) I have put my health in front of everything else and made me realize that taking care of myself needs to be the most important thing because if I don’t take care of myself, how do I expect to take care of others, take care of my business, take care of everything in my life that I want to take care of.  I’ve made small changes like going to yoga 3 times a week, working out consistently, eating better and just taking the time to work on myself or just enjoy being with myself.  I’m not good with words but I hope that if there are readers out there that are just like me and tries to put everything else but yourself first, please take the time to be good to yourself.  You will find yourself much more happier and at peace than ever.

I wanted to share a few articles that I came across that I bookmark and read often and hope that this can help you guys get a great start to 2013 as well.  I added a few little excerpts from each article but hope you click over to read the full articles.

Good basic tips to keep in mind, always.

4 Ways to Detox from the Inside Out from MindBodyGreen

I think this is something a lot of us deal with and the tips are not anything we don’t already know, but great reminders to think about every so often.

5 Tips to Avoid Overextending Yourself from Think Simple Now

I read Erica’s blog as she’s got great tips for entrepreneurs but I
thought that this was a great and relevant article for everyone.  I’m
not a facebook person (I use my page for the blog but don’t use my personal page so rarely read what my friends are up to – I’d rather just hang out with them in person to find out what they’ve been up to.) but I do read lots of blogs and end
up comparing myself to some bloggers that seem to have the most amazing
lives and then all of the sudden start to feel bad about my terribly
inadequate life.  I don’t feel like that most of the time as I know that I’m lucky to have the life that I have, but sometimes spending too much time reading blogs does that to me.  It’s hard not to compare yourself with others but it’s something I’m working on.  I like the perspective that Erica took in her post and made me think differently about comparing myself to others.

The Nastiest Habit (That We All Have) from Erica.biz

Marie Forleo is a great inspiration for entrepreneurs and small business owners but I loved her latest video which she’s emphasized that the best present you can ever give is your presence.  It emphasizes the holiday season but we need to remember this throughout the year.

I had a few experiences with a friend who, at dinner, just me and him,
would check his phone every 2 minutes and would laugh at his phone and
make all sorts of emotions and then would finally turn his head back to
me and then in the middle of the conversation would become distracted
again and look at his phone, hoping to see an incoming text.  It was, to say the least, very annoying.  After those dinners, I promised to never take my phone out in the middle of
dinner or whatever I’m doing when I’m with friends and family.  For
those of us, especially bloggers, but anyone who is very active in social
media, it’s something that we’ve fallen into a habit of checking our
phones so often.  And at one point, I can admit I was really bad at it
and had to have my husband point out to me how bad it was getting.  I do admit to taking my phone out to take photos every so often but my rule is that I don’t instagram/facebook it until I’m at home and not in the middle of dinner.  I do love hanging out with my blogger friends that get the whole social media thing and don’t care if we take pics or instagram them but most of my friends are not into social media so don’t really
understand it and so I try to respect that when I’m with them.

Lately I’ve been working on finding a good work-life balance and since I work from home it’s so easy to work all the time as my work is just right there but I know that when my husband comes home at night, he wants to hang out with me and not his half distracted wife who’s needing to check her email or working on our next collection, etc… I try to warn him when I’ll be needing to work longer so he can expect it (just like he lets me know when he needs to stay at the office late), but to me, my husband is the most important thing in the world to me and I would never want it to be where my work is or seems to be more imporant than him or our marriage.  After a year of working from home and figuring things out I finally have a good system and a work-life balance that my husband and I are more comfortable with but it’s still a struggle and something that I want to improve on.  Anyway, long story but I love the message of the best present you can ever give is your presence so wanted to share it with you all.

Thank you all so much for reading and visiting my blog.  I truly appreciate all your support.  I wish you all health, happiness, love and lots and lots of new shoes for the new year!

Being an entrepreneur

Life has been crazy lately and I’m so busy that my head is spinning constantly and I haven’t had a moment to rest.  And that is quite literal as I’ve been back from China for a week and I’m still not on a consistent sleep schedule.  It’s more like a “no sleep” schedule, I’m getting about 3 hours a night.  I’m thinking it won’t be about January until I actually get some sleep!

I absolutely love being a business owner and feel lucky and blessed to be living my dreams and doing what I love but what I learned from this year is that being a retailer this time of year means getting no rest or vacation starting from November and I suspect all the way through January.  We started our business only about a year and a half ago so last year we were too new to feel the rush of the holiday shopping madness but this year, OH MY.  What a difference a year makes.  This is not me complaining at all, there is nothing more thrilling to be as busy as we are, it’s just that this busy-ness truly smacked me in the face as I didn’t expect it to come this quick at all!  I get a lot of emails from readers about what it’s like to start a business and how I’ve managed it all and how I made the decision to leave my corporate job to start a business.  I can tell you that it’s been rough and it hasn’t been easy but every single thing has been worth the risk.  Just seeing what my sister and I (with the help of my parents and brother) have done in this short amount of time, makes me immensely proud and happy.  To see our jewelry on customers and to get wonderful emails from people that enjoy our line is a joy that I never experienced in my corporate life.  In my year and a half of doing this, I’ve never thought “ugh, 4 more hours left” or “only 3 more days until the weekend.” I used to have those thoughts constantly when I was working in the corporate world.  Every day I’m exhausted but happy and thrilled to be doing what I’m doing and I’m so thankful to everyone in my life who has supported me and helped me live out this dream.

Some of our recent press!

To those of you that that are wanting to take this path in life and becoming an entrepreneur I encourage you to start taking the steps to make your dreams a reality.  It’s definitely scary and you’ll lose sleep over all the risks that you have to take but to finally be living your dreams is the most amazing thing ever.

I don’t feel like I’m any kind of expert but with my experience I can tell you that these are a few things that I’ve realized what has helped me along the way.

super long and wordy post, click through to read more….

1. Be financially ready – When we started the jewelry line, I was still working as a consultant and was doing both jobs.  I knew I wasn’t going to do both forever, so I set a goal date of when I wanted to be full time dedicated to my jewelry line and I saved and saved until I knew that I had enough to not have to work X amount of months.  Having a goal date helped put in perspective that this was going to be “real” and that I may have to live without an income for a certain amount of months.  But putting together this plan helped ease my mind and my fears and helped my husband and I know what to expect.

from Joyce Poon – the owner of Noir Lash Lounge

2. Be prepared for the hard times – Yes not getting paid for all the hard work that you’ve put in sucks but remember this is your business, not just some job that you clock in and out of and expect a paycheck every two weeks. If you put yourself in the right mindset and knowing that you won’t see a profit for awhile, it’s a lot easier to go through and you can put it in the back of your mind.  Plus you can use it as motivation to get to where you want to be!

3. If you have a business partner – Communication, communication, communication – My sister and I have always had a good relationship and we’ve definitely become closer with the start of the business but with that said, we’ve definitely ran into a few bumps a long the road.  Nothing major of course but all that could be (and is) solved with better communication.  Us living in two different cities and time zones probably doesn’t help but even if we lived in the same city and worked in the same office, communication is always important no matter what.  Just being sure that your business partner is on the same page at all times is essential.  To us this means, not just understanding and being on the same page about long term goals, but short term and daily/weekly goals as well.  If you are running the business on your own or even with a small staff, make sure you have set your goals and your staff understands your goals!  It’s so much easier when everyone is working towards the same thing.

4. Network like you’ve never networked before – Not only has networking helped us grow like crazy but networking has also helped me meet so many other amazing female entrepreneurs that I can get together with and bounce ideas off each other and learn from each other.  When you network, your community doesn’t just grow a little, it grows a lot!  You never know who knows who and who could end up helping you in which way.  I’ve been connected through friends of friends or co-workers of someone that I met through networking, or even just acquaintances of a networking friend that happened to be able to help out.  Networking through my blog has been amazingly helpful as well!  I’ve even done some “cold call” networking where I’ve found out that somebody works at a certain place and I just wrote them an email or called them to introduce myself.  It’s crazy just how knowing a few people and asking the right questions can lead you to so many more opportunities your way.

5. This.

from Pinterest.  I don’t have the original source but if you do, let me know so I can credit it properly.

Believe in yourself.  Create your own opportunities.  Nobody else is going to do it for you.

And really lastly I couldn’t have done any of this without my support system.  My husband has been amazing through all of this.  I worked through the entire Thanksgiving week and in the past month, I’ve probably only spent a few full days with him as I left for China and came back but now spend most of my nights and weekends working with our shipping team and don’t get home until after he’s asleep.  He doesn’t like being away from me this much but he also understands that it’s what I need to do right now.  Through everything the business has been through, he’s supported me 100% and although the decisions are mine, having him behind me has been amazing.  The same with my family.  Along with my sister, who has been amazing to work with and partner with, my parents and brother have been a huge part of this business from the start and to have the support of our family I think just motivates us all to go bigger and do better each and every day.  I’ve been through some rough days but talking with my family on those rough days help me find a different perspective and understand why we all are doing this.

My business isn’t just my job or my career, it’s my life and I couldn’t see it any other way.  I don’t talk about this topic a lot as I do try to keep my blog and business separate (although it’s a fashion/style blog so of course I will incorporate it in some way! I just don’t talk about the business side of it so much.) but if you want to follow someone with fantastic advice about being an entrepreneur, check out Tasha at Imperfect Concepts.  Her Instagram is always full of great advice and what books/articles to read.  Plus she’s just the sweetest, coolest chick I’ve met on the internet!
