20 Short dresses to wear to a wedding

For my fellow petite ladies or just women who prefer shorter length dresses, I am here to tell you that you do not need to wear long dresses to the next wedding that you’re attending.

I’ve got you covered with 20 SHORT dresses to wear to a wedding (or other special occasion), with options that work for year round, different destinations and dress codes. Check it out below and be prepared to be the best-dressed guest!

As a petite woman, I typically opt for shorter dresses compared to longer lengths as they are a lot easier for me to wear and require way less tailoring.

I also LOVE shoes and love to show them off when I get to get all dressed up for a more formal event like a wedding.

There are so many perks to wearing mini dresses to a wedding, and they are truly the most functional for the dance floor!

Here is my ultimate guide to the best wedding guest dresses that are short. These will work for all body types, destinations, weather and more.

Short Wedding Guest Dresses for Warmer Months

Warmer weather calls for lighter, shorter, and comfier styles! The last thing you want to be is too hot or just uncomfortable during spring or summer nuptials.

My key tips to finding a shorter dress to wear for a wedding in warmer months is to opt for light, airy fabrics. Chiffon, lace or thin slinky satin would all make for an excellent choice.

Look for lighter colors when dressing for warmer weather, as darker colors tend to attract the sun.

Keep an eye out for pretty pastels, bright colors or neutrals and avoid your dark jewel tones and little black dresses.

Stick to these same guidelines if you are dressing for daytime weddings as well.

spring/summer wedding guest short dresses

When it comes to spring or summer weddings, stick to thinner sleeves, flattering off shoulders and breezy fabrics.

This is the time to bring out your bright colors such as neon pinks and bright blues, or floral print.

A puff shoulder detail for mini dresses helps to balance out the shorter length but still feels appropriate for a formal event setting.

These details are great guidelines to go off of when choosing a short dress for a wedding in the warmer months.

Short Wedding Guest Dresses for Colder Months

Shorter dresses are not just for warmer months! There are plenty of shorter options that would be a great choice for a fall wedding or winter wedding.

The key to finding a short wedding guest dress in the colder months is to look for a warmer fabric!

Think velvet, thicker satin or embroidered fabric with a heavier weight.

Another key detail when it comes to wearing a short dress for a wedding in cooler weather is sleeves!

Loving these cute Satin Tie cocktail dresses.

Longer sleeves help to balance out the shorter length and will keep your upper body covered and warm.

Long sleeves for a wedding guest dress is perfect as it is so timeless and classic.

fall/winter wedding guest short dresses

Look for thicker fabrics when it comes to fall/winter weddings.

A gorgeous velvet fabric as well as a thicker stain feels luxe and helps you stay warm and stylish.

When dressing for colder months, opt for long sleeves as it is an added detail that looks so sleek and is also really flattering with the shorter length.

You could easily pair any of these styles with a pair of tights or heeled booties to also add some extra warmth.

Short Wedding Guest Dresses for Black-Tie Weddings

If you are attending a black-tie affair, you will be in need of a more formal look.

Typically I think most of us think of a floor length gown when searching for formal attire, but there are so many gorgeous formal dresses that come in a shorter length.

A little black dress of course is a go-to, but there are plenty of options for short dress styles that will work for black-tie weddings.

When it comes to dressing for a more formal wedding, think of luxe fabrics and details.

These key pieces turn a casual celebration dress to a more formal feel that is appropriate for black tie weddings.

black-tie wedding guest dresses

These finds above are really great options for a black tie dress code while still opting for the short length as opposed to a maxi dress length.

Luxe details such as beading, feathers and sheer necklines help to give that extra oomph to an otherwise simple silhouette.

This attention to detail really makes your short dress feel appropriate for the formal setting and are just so gorgeous and feminine.

I would pair any of these dresses with some statement jewelry and some simple sleek heels, as well as a sleek updo to really push the glam elements.

Short Wedding Guest Dresses for Beach Weddings

When it comes to a beach destination wedding, the dress code is typically casual and informal compared to traditional weddings.

It is common to wear short party dresses to beach weddings to avoid your longer dress dragging on the sand.

A flowy fit, pretty bright colors and fun floral prints are all go-to’s for breach weddings.

Beach weddings do seem to be more of a casual wedding and have a bit less of a formal feel, so you can easily opt for shorter hemlines and airy, comfortable fabrics.

I loved the silhouette of this cotton dress shown above with the added ruffle and one shoulder detail that makes it totally wedding appropriate!

Simple details like this can really turn more casual dresses into wedding appropriate.

And pro tip – opt for wedges over heels so you do not dig into the sand during the ceremony/reception!

beach wedding guest short dresses

Beach weddings are SO fun and so are the dresses to wear to attend them.

I love to look for airy details such as an open back or flowy silhouette as it not only fits the setting but also helps to keep you cool while on the beach.

You can always pack a shawl or light jacket with you if it cools down into the evening.

When attending a beach destination wedding, I always love to opt for a bold colorful print or just a bright color in general as it is so fitting to the celebration.

Beach weddings do tend to be more casual, so don’t shy away from reaching towards more casual fabrics and dressing up the look with your accessories!

This is an easy trick to utilize a floral vacation dress and turn it into a perfect wedding guest look.

Summer Style tips: What to wear over a sleeveless dress

Are you looking for different ways to style your sleeveless dresses during the warmer months?

Here are the best tops and layers to wear over a sleeveless dress in Summer.

This guide works not only for Summer styling but as a general guide of how to style sleeveless clothing if you are looking to cover up your arms or just add a bit of extra warmth.

There are so many possibilities when it comes to styling a sleeveless dress, so whether you pair it with your favorite denim jacket or mix it up with an on trend sheer button down, the options are endless.

Check out all of the cute summer outfit ideas below that will keep you cool and stylish this summer even without long sleeves.

Sleeveless Dress Styling Tips:

#1 – Opt for sheer fabrics

The summer months are always so warm, and sheer fabrics will be your best friend! They give you the added layer without the heat and look ultra stylish

#2 – Drape over your shoulders

For an effortless effect and stylish feel, drape your layer over your shoulders to allow breeze to flow around you as you walk.

This also makes it really easy to remove the layer so you don’t have to fully commit or create an outfit around the layer if you really want the dress to shine throughout the day/night

#3 Layer underneath

We all know we can add layers on top of our sleeveless dress, but don’t forget you can also layer underneath!

Adding a basic tee or even a button down underneath a sleeveless dress gives it a totally new look and transforms it into a dress with sleeves if that is the style you’re looking for

These tips are great for sleeveless tops as well, all these tips will help cover up the upper arms.

Even on hot days when I like to wear sleeveless pieces, sometimes I still don’t want to show too much skin.

These are all great ideas to pair with your sleeveless maxi dresses or even just anything with shorter sleeves!

The Most Flattering Sleeveless Dress from Amazon

As an added bonus, I wanted to share this incredible sleeveless dress from Amazon.

This dress has over 30k reviews and for good reason!

The ruching on the sides of the dress along with the asymmetrical hem make it so flattering on all body types.

Plus it comes in 36 different color ways and print options and is under $35.

If you are looking for a great go-to summer outfit, get a great basic sleeveless dress like this and pair it with all of the fun layers I suggest below.

This one dress can create so many fun different looks for Summer and will be one you constantly reach for.
Your Summer wardrobe will thank you with this cute dress.

The Best Tops and Layers to Wear With a Sleeveless Dress in Summer

Denim jacket / Jean jacket

Most of us have a favorite jean jacket in our closet already.

It is a go-to layer pretty much year round and the easiest way to toss over any outfit.

The jean jacket is the perfect option for the summer months as it pairs perfectly summery dresses and tank tops, plus it isn’t too hot!

It’s so easy and a fun look for kids too!

Mommy and me striped maxi dresses

Style this type of look for daytime, and for night you could swap the sneakers for wedges or flat sandals and you are ready for date night!

You can even get denim in different colors like a light wash and dark wash to mix it up!

I recently did this look with my new favorite sleeveless jumpsuit and it was perfect for date night!

Sheer top

A sheer top is a genius layer for the summer as it’s not hot at all but still gives you the added sleeve length and is such a stylish way to layer with.

This feels so feminine and dainty and it adds that element to any dress you pair it with.

From short sleeve to long sleeve, any sheer top you find can seamlessly be added over a sleeveless dress to create a new outfit for the hot weather.

Pair a sheer button down over a slip dress. Or a short sleeve sheer top underneath a strapless dress.

*Style Tip* You could also pair a sheer top/bodysuit underneath a sleeveless dress for a stylish look.

Leather jacket / Black moto jacket

A faux leather jacket or moto jacket may not be in the forefront of your mind for Summer dressing, but the contrast of a flowy summer dress with a leather jacket at night is a combo that can work for those breezy summer nights.

The two pair together effortlessly and the jacket adds a bit of edge to a more feminine style dress.

A slip dress paired with the leather moto jacket is one of my best style tips for summer days.

You can even wear this look during the winter months if you add tights and boots.

A leather blazer is so trendy right now and can work year round.

Or try a leather shirt jacket!

For the summer, wear this for date night out on a breezy summer night!

Lace Kimono / Lace Jacket

If you are looking for a light layer or just simply want to cover your arms but do not want any added extra warmth, and sheer kimono or lace jacket is the perfect option for you.

The open weave of lace allows breeze to flow through seamlessly and really looks so pretty paired with a sleeveless dress.

Long cardigan

I love the effortless look of a duster cardigan, and I feel like they pair perfectly with a more fitted sleeveless dress in the Summer.

If you work in a office setting, this would be a great outfit option to wear to work.

The cardigan is appropriate for the workplace, and the length in the back is always appreciated with a shorter/more fitted dress.

My tip to pairing a cardigan with a sleeveless dress for Summer is to pick a lighter weight knit, this way the layer doesn’t make you feel too warm but still gives you the added layer and sleeve length.

Sheer cardigan

Along with the cardigan idea, a sheer cardigan is another great one for the Summer months.

The sheer fabric or loose knit helps to keep air flowing and in general the sheer cardigan look pairs perfectly with a summery dress as it completes the laid back feel.

You could also do the same thing with sheer blouses or even different kind of tops to go over your favorite summer dresses.

Suit jackets / Blazer

Blazers are a go-to for me year round as I instantly feel more put together and stylish when I add a blazer to my outfit.

A blazer is a great option for the Summer, especially a linen blazer or cotton blend style, as they are effortless and pair so nicely with a chic sleeveless dress.

One of my all time favorite blazers is by Amazon’s The Drop collection.

It’s such great quality, well made and priced under $100! I own it in multiple colors and am wearing the white in size M below.

I like to size up for blazers to that they are oversized and roomy.

I love the effortless feel of draping it over your shoulders, or styling it a as a full monochrome look with all neutral shades.

This is another great summer outfit idea for the office, and can easily translate for happy hour afterwards.

Button down shirt

This could be a classic button down, chambray, plaid or flannel shirt.

Button down tops are really trending right now, they look great with jeans or worn open over leggings and a crop top.

I love to use them as almost a lightweight jacket and wear them over a sleeveless dress.

Whether it’s a classic white or a fun printed plaid, this is not only the perfect layer to cover your arms if needed, but you can always tie it around your waist as well if you get warm and it looks so cute.

Try tying it and wearing it as full top over a fitted sleeveless dress as well!

This gives your dress a completely new look and this kind of outfit works for so many different occasions. You could wear this to the office or to the farmers market.

From juggling work, to activities with my girls, and everything in between.

A classic fitted sleeveless tank dress, a fun flannel tied around the waist and cute sneakers.

You are comfy and good to go for wherever the day takes you.

Pullover sweater

Turn your favorite sleeveless dress into a skirt when you pair a lightweight pullover sweater over top!

This look maximizes your wardrobe options and is such an easy outfit to throw together that looks really polished.

The contrast of the thin knit paired over a sleeveless silky slip dress is so chic.

This would be gorgeous for a nice summer dinner out.

Layer a T-shirt

As I had mentioned above, don’t forget about the option to pair something UNDER your sleeveless dress.

Whether it be a basic t-shirt or a classic button down, when you pair a pretty slip dress or flowy sleeveless dress on top it becomes an entirely new, stylish look.

It’s a great way to cover your bare arms but also still be able to see the dress.

The key is to find a slim fit tee so that it doesn’t bunch or move.

You can style the dress with a cute belt bag to bring in the waist.

The dress itself looks like it could be dressier, but when paired with the basic tee underneath it instantly becomes perfect for a day of lunch and shopping.

It’s such an effortless feel to pair a pretty dress with a tee. Another great idea is to pair it with a bodysuit so that it definitely won’t shift around.

We all have a favorite sleeveless maxi dress in our closets – just add a tee underneath and you’ve transformed it into a short sleeve dress!

Things To Consider Before Choosing Your Date Night Dress:

  • Location – Are you going to a fancy dinner or having a picnic in the park? Both of these events would have entirely different styles of dresses that would be best to fit the setting
  • Weather – What time of year is it? Do you need layers, or is it mid-summer? Is there rain/snow in the forecast?
  • Occasion – Are you celebrating a birthday or grabbing brunch? You want your dress to be appropriate for the setting and you don’t want to feel over or under dressed.
  • Appropriate Accessories – The right accessories to complete your look and add extra elements of style, but you want them to add to the outfit and not take away from functionality/comfort. Will you be walking a lot? Maybe opt for flats or sneakers. Will you be outside? Complete the look with a cute hat!

Casual Dresses for Date Night:

I wear casual dresses year round and for date night it is no exception! I always feel comfortable in dresses and I feel the most like myself in them so it is a win, win. The key to styling dresses more casually is sticking to casual fabrics (like breezy cotton, lightweight knits, etc.) and to pick functional accessories to take you through the day comfortable.

For casual date night looks I typically pair dresses with sneakers, flats, wedges, booties and complete the look with sun hats, dainty jewelry, headbands and crossbody bags. This is a simple outfit formula that I like to use that makes getting dressed a breeze!

T-shirt Dress:

A t-shirt material dress is always a great option for a casual date. They look cute with sneakers or wedges and are the absolutely comfiest! Pair it with a headband or cute hoop earrings to add an extra pop.

My favorite casual date night outfits are ones that I feel good in but I am comfy in at the same time and a dress like this is definitely a top choice!

Wrap dresses are really flattering and accentuate curves and help to create the illusion of a cinched in waist. I love wearing a long sleeve maxi wrap dress with booties in the Fall for a casual date night look.

I loved the deep v-neckline on this mini dress that was a refined take to a plunging dress.

*Pro tip: You could achieve this same look with a top and mini skirt too!

White dresses are great for any occasion except of course a wedding! But I think white dresses are great to take on a sunny vacation if you are headed to a nice resort and dress up for dinner.

*Pro Tip: When styling dresses in neutral colors, add a fun pop of color with your bag/clutch or shoes! It makes the outfit fun and creates a bit of a statement.

Shop white dresses:

As I mentioned above, you can’t go wrong with wrap dresses, even for fancy dinners and date night events! They are always appropriate, ultra flattering, and when paired with the right accessories like statement earrings or strappy heels, they will almost always fit the dress code.

My go to little black dress is this asymmetrical hem bodycon dress. It is so comfortable and you can really style it both more casually or fancy, but when going for the dressed up feel I like to pair it with over the knee boots and a chic coat for a date night out in the fall. During the warmer months, you can pair the dress with black high heels for a chic look.

Styling Short Dress with Sleeves – 2 ways

I love dresses with sleeves. I always have and always will.  My arms are not my favorite part of my body so I always try to keep them covered but I also love a short dress with sleeves to emphasize the legs and of course the shoes!  I recently got these two dresses that both happen to be red but I love that they are both different styles, one that is more dressy and one more casual.

I love dresses just because you don’t have to think too much about it!  I have so much fun picking out the shoes and accessories to go with it like this adorable embroidered clutch and gold sandals.

I love this little ruffle dress and the back has a bow on it!  It’s so cute and comfy and even though I paired it with heels, I will totally wear this with wedges or flat sandals as well.  It’s just one of those dresses that I can toss on and not have to worry about my outfit too much.  Plus it’s only $20!  I’m wearing the XS and as you can see it’s a bit roomy so stay true to size if you are planning on ordering it too!

And then we have this pretty lace red dress that’s perfect for date nights with my husband and these sparkly heels that make me feel oh so fancy!  I just love the the lace of this dress and the bell sleeves are just so fun!

I just recently discovered this brand and I’m loving their perfectly girly, glam dresses.  I also have this one in blue – as seen on me on instagram – that I adore.

Summer Wedding Guest – What to wear to a beach wedding

My brother is getting married in Costa Rica next month!  I’m so excited for the wedding and just getting away to a gorgeous tropical vacation!  I still trying to decide what to wear so I bought a ton of dresses online and wanted to share with you what I am deciding between.  I wanted something appropriate for a wedding but also not too dressy as they have emphasized that they want everyone to be comfortable and also that it will be on the beach so heels would not be recommended.  I also didn’t want to spend a lot of money so tried to stay around $100-$150.  I haven’t yet decided on shoes but most likely will be in flat sandals and then wedges later on for the reception.

Dress 1: This lace skater dress is so so cute!  I love the lace and the scallops and how the skirt is just the right amount of poofiness.  I’m not leaning towards this one since we will be in Costa Rica I would rather have some color but I had to get it and try it on as I loved it online and I love it even more in person.  I may have to keep it and just wear it for another occasion.

Dress 2: This dress might be a bit too casual but I like having just a basic dress to add accessories to.  I love this pink and think it will be really pretty with a tan.

Dress 3: This fit & flare dress is so cute and combines the things I like about the first two, the color and the lace!  However I just didn’t feel like it was very flattering on me so I am taking this one back.  It is currently on sale though!

Dress 4: This midi dress is my favorite out of the bunch.  I love the big floral pattern and the midi length.   Also great that it’s cotton as Costa Rica will be hot hot hot.  AND it was on sale for 40% off! It’s at the top of my list!

I just got these dresses in the mail this weekend and didn’t have a chance to photograph them on.

This jeweled drop waist dress is so pretty and it’s only $55!  And this blue lace dress is really pretty on.  I love the cut out back and also that it comes in petite sizing.  This little pink dress
is a cute option for a more basic dress like the 2nd one from above but
I like that this one gives more shape and is not as casual.

Party Dresses under $100

I know it’s almost Christmas and you’ve probably already attended your share of holiday parties but I have one more very special occasion to attend. My brother and his fiance are getting married!  They are getting married in Costa Rica in 2016 but first are getting married at the courthouse, which holds a special place in my heart as that is what my husband and I did (see the post here) before our wedding in Jamaica.  So I went on a hunt for a dress to wear to the occasion and ended up finding so many that I loved.  I refuse to spend a ton of money on fancy dresses as I find that I end up wearing the dress only a few times and then it just sits in my closet, so I rounded up my favorite all under $100, but mostly under $50!

Clock wise from Top Left

As you can see, I was a little obsessed with red or black, lace or sheer detail dresses and I do prefer dresses with sleeves but it’s not the deciding factor.  I ended up with this red dress which I LOVE.  It’s even more gorgeous in person and being that it was under $30 made it that much better.

Missguided Dresses Review

honest review of missguided dresses

During the summer I realized that I needed more dresses.  Last summer I was pregnant and I lived in dresses but they were all big and billowy to fit over my big belly.  I did not feel like looking pregnant again so I went on a hunt for some cute dresses.  I found missguided.com and have never shopped there before.  I liked quite a few styles so I placed an order and ended up loving what I got!

This Neon Pink Dress is the perfect dress to accessorize.  The color was hard to capture on camera but it most closely resembles the hot pink color that you see on me below.  The dress is very lightweight and almost like a jersey material which means it’s very unforgiving.  It definitely can show your lumps and bumps and even your underwear line.  I solved that by wearing a slip (I’m a fan of this spanx slip) but just so you know in case you get it too!  Other than that, love the dress and the color.  Missguided is a UK brand so I’m always iffy about my sizing.  They equate a UK 4 to a US 0 so I got the size 4 and it fit great so I would stick to their size chart for their sizing suggestions.

Missguided Dresses Review
I was heading out to a store opening party with a friend so I decided on this outfit.  I paired the dress with my Brian Atwood pumps, a t+j Designs necklace and lucite clutch.
Missguided Dresses Review
But of course I made some last minute changes so this is what I really wore out.  Changed into my Louboutin heels and Chanel bag.
Missguided Dresses Review

I wanted something fancy for not only the holidays but also in planning for a girls Vegas trip, where we always like to get a little bit more dressed up. So I picked up this Lace Dress.  I took a 4 in this as well and it fits perfectly like it was made for me.  It zips up in the back which I’m always concerned about as I’m not the biggest fan of back zippers but I understand why they had to add it to the back so that the front of the dress will lay nicely.

The lace is delicate but stretchy so the top is pretty flexible for different sizes.  The waist though, doesn’t have much give so if I gain any weight, it may not fit!  I’ve seen similar dresses for over $100 so was pleased to find this one for $60 (it’s now $55!).

Always the fan of long sleeve dresses, I was immediately attracted to this floral print dress (now on sale).  I liked that it wasn’t too long or too short, however if you are taller than me (I’m 5’2″), it might be quite short on you.  It’s a great dress for these end of summer/early fall nights.  It’s lightweight and fully lined .  There’s not much give in the hips so I wouldn’t advise it to someone who is more curvy in the hip area.

Missguided Dresses Review
And lastly I picked up this sweater as I just love the pink with the subtle heart.  I have to say out of all the items, this sweater ended up being my favorite!  It’s so soft and warm and very cute on.  I will be wearing it lots this winter.

Overall, I was impressed with the quality of everything I received.  It is very similar to ASOS in price, style and quality.  A lot of their styles trend younger – trendy and skimpy so not exactly my style but there was plenty of styles that I found that I liked.  Shipping wise – because I spent over $120 they upgraded me to US express shipping (I believe they ship from the UK) so I got my package very quickly, in about 4 days I think.  For returns, you have 14 days to return and you will have to pay for return shipping but they have a US address that you send it back to.  Fit wise – I would say everything I bought runs true to size but also runs small.  And I mean that in the way that it fits but because none of the dresses have give to them the hips/thighs were a bit more clingy.  If you are a bit more curvy, I’d size up because I feel like their dresses are made for women with the up and down straight body types.  I think next time I may try a size up just to see the fit.  Pricing seems to fluctuate (I assume due to the exchange rate?) as everything I bought has already changed in prices but only by a few dollars here and there. It’s not a place that I will shop at a lot but I do like browsing the site and when I’m looking for a specific trendy piece I will definitely be shopping there.
