Tips for Choosing Swimsuit Outfit Ideas For Your Next Vacation

  1. Consider Your Body Type: Choose a swimsuit that flatters your body type and makes you feel confident and comfortable.
  2. Think About the Occasion: Consider the activities you will be doing and the location of your vacation when choosing your swimsuit outfit. A more conservative swimsuit might be more appropriate for a family vacation, while a daring swimsuit might be perfect for a romantic getaway or beach date.
  3. Mix and Match: Don’t be afraid to mix and match different pieces to create a unique swimsuit outfit.
  4. Accessorize: Add accessories like sunglasses, hats, and cover-ups to complete your swimsuit outfit and protect your skin from the sun.
  5. Try on Different Styles: Don’t be afraid to try on different styles and colors to find the perfect swimsuit outfit for your next vacation.
  6. Consider Comfort: Choose a swimsuit that is comfortable and allows you to move freely, especially if you plan on being active in the water.

Swimsuit Outfit Essentials

Other than your swimsuit, in order to create an outfit around your swimsuit there are a few essentials you can include to easily create an effortless swimsuit outfit!

swimsuit Coverups:

When it comes to swimsuit outfits, cover-ups are a must-have. A lightweight kaftan, a breezy sarong, or a chic maxi dress are all great options to throw on over your swimsuit.

Not only do they provide some much-needed sun protection, but they also give you the option to easily transition from the beach to a restaurant or other outing.

They also add a stylish touch to your beach or pool look.

Pair this button down coverup with a gorgeous neutral one piece swimsuit, gold accessories and a fun woven tote bag!

Sun Protection:

Some stylish sun protection ideas for a swimsuit outfit could be wearing a wide-brimmed hat or a straw hat, a lightweight sarong or cover-up, sunglasses with UV protection, and applying sunscreen with a high SPF.

Additionally, you could opt for swimwear with built-in UV protection or choose a rash guard top for extra coverage.

Practical Footwear:

For a beach or pool day, you could consider pairing your swimsuit with some stylish flip flops, strappy sandals, or espadrilles.

If you’re looking for something more unique, you could try wearing gladiator sandals, lace-up flats, or even clear jelly shoes.

Just make sure to choose a shoe that is comfortable and appropriate for the activities you have planned.

Here are some more gorgeous resortwear ready sandals that are the perfection addition to your swimsuit outfit!

Stylish Bags:

A woven beach tote, a colorful canvas backpack, or a clear PVC crossbody bag are all great options to complete your cute beach outfits.

You may want to carry a larger size tote that will fit all of your essentials. Choose a bag in a material that won’t get ruined even if some of the items inside get wet or sandy.

A great option for this are these silicone totes that are very easy to wipe clean, perfect for your beach day or beach vacation!

Light colors are a good choice as they won’t get as hot if left in the direct sun.

For an elevated look, a straw or woven tote or clutch is the perfect accessory to take you from the pool to dinner.

10 Swimsuit Outfit Ideas for Your Next Vacation

Swimsuit outfit essentials include a swimsuit (obviously), a cover-up or sarong, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and flip flops or sandals.

You may also want to bring a beach bag to carry your essentials.

You can pair a swimsuit with a cover-up, like a sarong or a sundress, or wear it as a top with high-waisted shorts or a skirt.

You can also accessorize with statement jewelry, sunglasses, and a sun hat to complete the look. Here are some of my favorite swimsuit outfit ideas to inspire you for your next vacation!

FLOWY COVER UP AND SWIMSUIT

One-piece swimsuit with a flowy beach cover-up and a wide-brimmed hat for a chic and sophisticated look

A one-piece swimsuit and a kimono cover-up make a stylish combination for the beach or pool.

You can pair a solid colored swimsuit with a printed kimono or vice versa.

Another idea is to match the colors in your kimono with your swimsuit.

Accessorize with a floppy hat, sunglasses, and sandals to complete the look.

PAIR YOUR SWIMSUIT WITH SHORTS

One-piece swimsuits or a bikini paired with a pair of shorts and a cropped tank top for a trendy and comfortable outfit

You can style a swimsuit with high waisted denim shorts by tucking the swimsuit into the shorts and adding a belt to cinch the waist.

You can also accessorize with a hat, sunglasses, and sandals for a chic beach look.

This is also a great outfit to wear if you are headed out to eat and don’t want to feel self concious about your tummy area.

MATCHING SETS

A colorful matching set worn over your bikini with a pair of sandals and a straw hat

To style a swimsuit with a matching set outfit coverup, you can choose a coverup that complements the color or pattern of your swimsuit.

A two-piece set takes the guesswork out of putting an outfit together but looks SO stylish.

These crop top sets from Amazon add a pop of color even over a plain swimsuit.

You can also accessorize with sunglasses, a hat, and sandals to complete the look.

flowy minidress

A flowy white mini dress coverup paired with a bright colored bikini and colorful accessories

To style a flowy white mini dress coverup with a bright colored bikini, try pairing it with some strappy sandals, a wide-brimmed sun hat, and some statement sunglasses.

You can also add some simple jewelry, like hoop earrings or a dainty necklace, to complete the look.

When it comes to the color of the bikini, consider complementary colors, like a coral or turquoise bikini with the white dress.

The mini dress coverup in a lightweight fabric makes the best beach outfit, since it is so easy to take on and off.

keep it casual with a romper

A t-shirt style dress or romper worn over your swimsuit paired with a baseball cap for a sporty look

A t-shirt dress or romper is such an effortless throw on over a swimsuit while still making you look stylish.

I love to wear a romper like the striped one above over my swimsuit as it makes it so easy to go out for lunch or dinner after the beach and I don’t have to worry about changing at all.

Plus, you can find t-shirt dresses and rompers in breezy cotton or linen fabrics that are perfect for warm weather.

use your swimsuit as a top

A one-piece swimsuit worn with jeans in place of a bodysuit

Your one-piece can instantly be turned into a bodysuit when paired with high waisted denim!

This is a great outfit idea if you are looking to pack light for a vacation, as you get 2 looks out of 1 out of the swimsuit!

I loved this look for a Summer date night outfit idea, it looked so cute paired with heels and would also look great with wedges on vacation.

chic denim skirt

Colorful swimsuit paired with a denim skirt and a straw tote bag for a fun and playful beach outfit

A colorful swimsuit paired with a denim skirt makes for a playful and fun outfit.

You can complete the look by adding a pair of white sneakers or sandals, statement sunglasses, and a straw tote bag for a beachy vibe.

For a more elevated look, you can swap the denim skirt for a white or black linen midi skirt and add a pair of heeled sandals.

maxi dress for all occasions

A flowy maxi dress worn over your swimsuit paired with a large beach tote.

You can create a swimsuit outfit with a flowy maxi dress by wearing the dress over your swimsuit.

Choose a swimsuit that complements the dress and add a pair of sandals or flip-flops.

Accessorize with a sun hat and sunglasses for a complete look.

Wearing a flowy maxi dress as a swimsuit cover-up can provide several perks such as protecting your skin from the sun, keeping you cool and comfortable, offering coverage and modesty, and providing a stylish and versatile look that can easily transition from the beach or pool to other activities.

a stylish jumpsuit

A jumpsuit worn over your swimsuit for a comfortable and chic look

Wearing a jumpsuit as a swimsuit cover can offer several perks, such as being easy to put on and take off, and giving a stylish and versatile look that can transition from the beach to dinner effortlessly!

Additionally, jumpsuits can be made from lightweight and breathable fabrics that are comfortable in hot weather.

maxi skirt and bikini

Printed bikini paired with a flowy maxi skirt and a statement necklace for a bohemian-inspired look

I love the boho vibe that a printed bikini and flowy maxi skirt paired together gives.

Start by pairing the bikini top with the skirt.

Opt for a maxi skirt that has a similar color scheme or pattern as the bikini.

Add some bohemian flair by accessorizing with a wide-brimmed hat, layered necklaces, and some statement rings.

Complete the look with a pair of strappy sandals.

Swimsuit season is here! If you are a mama looking for post baby swimsuits this post is for you.

Here are 5 tips to finding the best post baby swimsuits, plus flattering styles for all postpartum moms and body types that you can shop now!

Shopping for swimwear can be a challenging process, and it can feel that much more daunting after you give birth and are trying to flatter and feel comfortable in your new body.

Embrace your beautiful postpartum body and new curves with this round up of the best post baby swimsuits!

Keep reading for tons of cute finds that work for all body types, plus my tips on finding the most flattering fits and where to shop for postpartum swimwear.

5 Tips to Finding The Best Post Baby Swimsuits (+ flattering styles to shop now)

With the warm weather comes lots of water based activities, and while you want to be involved with your kids in these events, you may feel hesitant to wear a swimsuit because of your new post-baby body and likely postpartum pooch.

It is totally normal to feel uncomfortable in your body post baby, here are my tips to help you feel your BEST in your post baby body and rock that swimsuit!

5 Tips to Find the Right Post Baby Swimsuit

Before you set out to do your swimsuit shopping, here are my 5 essential tips that you should know to help you choose the perfect postpartum swimsuit.

Keep these in mind while shopping, and ultimately just make sure you choose a swimsuit that you feel confident in – no matter what it is!

5 Tips to Find the Right Post Baby Swimsuit

#1 Proper Fit

The number/size on your suit does not matter – this goes for all clothing, in all aspects of life.

Different brands use different size guides, so my best advice is to not obsess over the number and to try on multiple sizes to see what truly FEELS the best when it is on.

You will know by how the suit feels, not by the size number on the tag.

#2 Comfort

Comfort is key for a swimsuit, especially in a postpartum body.

Think about the features that are most important to you – if you will be breastfeeding, you will need something adjustable/easy to pull down, if you are running around with the kids, you will want something full coverage that stays put.

Some suits even have a built in tummy control panel which is great for post baby but it might not be something that you necessarily need so just focus on the parts that are most important to you.

Comfort is a main factor in helping you feel confident in your body, and that is the #1 goal!

#3 Body Type

Bottom line….everyone’s body type is different!

There will never be a one size / one style fits all kind of suit, so figuring out your body shape is essential to find the suit that will be the most comfortable and flattering on you.

Some examples of body types are rectangle shaped, pear shaped or hourglass shaped.

Keep in mind height differences also matter in swimwear! If you are tall or petite, different styles and fits will make a huge difference.

Related Post: Where to buy Petite Swimwear

If you have a more rectangular shaped body, your waist, hips and bust are very similar in size.

One shoulder bathing suits look great with this body type, as well as the ruched suits to create the fullness that hits in the right spots.

If you have a pear shaped body type, wrap style swimsuits really flattering your shape. You can always be strategic with the colors, and opting for darker colors on the bottom and lighter colors towards the top.

If you have an hourglass body type, form fitting suits are a great option and will really show off your naturally cinched waist!

#4 Adjustable Straps

An absolutely necessity for a post baby swimsuit in my opinion is adjustable straps/ties!

Not only do they allow for easy access if you need to nurse your child, but they allow you the flexibility to fit the bathing suit to your perfect comfort level.

You can tie it super tight or loosen it up depending on your preference, and this also helps for postpartum bodies as our size can be constantly shifting.

One thing that you can easily look for is wide straps which can definitely help with nursing moms that need more support!

#5 Have fun with it!

This is arguably the most important tip – have fun with your suit!!

We all dread bathing suit shopping, and post baby the swimsuit try on and shopping process can be even more emotional.

Have fun with experimenting with different styles, colors, fun prints, etc. and remember to not take it so seriously so that you feel GOOD in your body and in your swimsuit.

If you love bright colors, or bold prints – go for it! Whatever makes you feel like yourself and is truly comfortable to wear is the perfect suit for you.

THE ONE SWIMSUIT THAT ALL MOMS SHOULD OWN

If there is one swimsuit I could recommend to every woman, it is this one.

I am partial to this swimsuit because it’s been my favorite since I purchased it but considering it has over 25,000 four star ratings I’d say it is a fave of many women!

It comes in a ton of colors and patterns and is super flattering on every body type! It sucks you in at all the right places but more than that, it just holds you in!

So if you are in the pool holding your baby or trying to run after your toddler, you never have to worry about anything shifting.

5 Flattering Post Baby Swimsuits for All Body Types

Here are the best postpartum swimsuits for women.

Ruched Swimsuits

The ruching detail flatters all curves and hides unwanted lines.

If you are unsure about which style swimsuit you want, or unsure what will flatter your body type the most, you can’t go wrong with a swimsuit with ruching detail!

The gathered in sides create flattering lines, hide any unwanted lines and work for all body types.

The ruching detail can be found on all different kinds of swimsuits (one pieces, two-piece swimsuits, tankinis, etc.) are are a great universal go to for a flattering fit.

These swimsuits are also great if you have loose skin in your tummy area or if you have a c-section scar as they are not super fitted to the body, but still flatter the body as if they are custom fit exactly to your shape!

Here are some great ruched swimsuit options that would be perfect for a postpartum body!

High Waisted Bottoms

Great for tummy control and to accentuate your waist

I am ALL for high waisted anything – denim, shorts, swimsuits, you name it! The high waisted fit really helps to cinch in the waist and flatter curves.

This suit I’m wearing above is a great option with the ruched top with removable straps and the high-waisted bikini bottoms.

High-waisted suits is the perfect option to hold in belly pooch or to cover up a c-section scar.

If your tummy area is where you are most uncomfortable with, I highly recommend finding a high-waisted bottom with the tummy control panels.

This feature really makes you feel sucked in and ultra secure in your suit, and isn’t something that requires constant readjusting such as swimsuit bottom with tie sides.

There are lots of options out now that are very affordable that include this feature.

Here are some great options I have found that are also really affordable.

Most flattering Swimsuits for Women Over 40

Swimsuit season is just around the corner. If you are looking for swimsuits for women over 40, or just in general are looking for a more modest yet flattering swimsuit style, this post is for you.

I think the majority of us find shopping for swimwear to be a pretty daunting task. And it seems the older we get, the more challenging the process can be to find something flattering and comfortable.

There are so many incredible swimwear brands and styles these days, but as much as I love the skinny strapped triangle bikinis and low-rise bottoms, I am in a phase in my life where those styles do not feel comfortable to wear.

My goal for shopping for a new swimsuit is to feel sexy and fun, but still appropriate to wear around my kids or in public at the beach.

I want a swimsuit that flatters my body and is comfortable to chase my kids around.

This post contains affiliate links. By using my links to shop I may receive a small commission. Thank you for your support!

There is no perfect swimsuit, but when it comes to shopping for swimsuits for older women, my #1 advice is to wear what you feel the most confident in, WHATEVER that may be.

If a strappy bikini is what you feel best in, rock it! If you prefer a tankini style and high waisted bottoms, own it!

If you are on the hunt for the best swimsuits this season, here are some tried and true tips for older women when shopping for a swimsuit!

Swimsuits for Women Over 40: Shopping Tips & Flattering Styles

Tips for Shopping for Swimsuits for Women Over 40

#1 Purchase multiple styles to find what works for you and your body

You might be surprised how a different silhouette can flatter your body!

I was so surprised when I tried on a higher neck swimsuit top for the first time and realized how flattering the fit was on me.

Be open to trying different styles and really experimenting with different silhouettes to find what fit you like best and what shapes flatter your body type the most.

The best bathing suits are not what’s more popular or in style, it’s what fits best for you!

#2 Try on in the comfort of your own home

Trying on swimsuits at the store is something I will never do again.

After years and years of trying multiple styles on in store, and having to continue to grab different sizes or realize it looks different once I finally took it home and tried it on again, I vowed to never do this again.

Make it easy and order the styles you want to try on and have a try on haul in the comfort of your own home.

This gives you the freedom to take your time and really see what styles you love and in general be more comfortable and in a less pressure filled mindset from the beginning.

#3 Stick to colors/prints that make you feel the most confident and stylish

If you feel most confident in bright/bold colors – go for it! If you’re more of a neutrals girl, stick to classic black/white and earthy tones. It’s great to try out different colors as you’ll want to find something that flatters your skintone.

Your swimsuit should express your personal style while still being flattering and comfortable. There are so many swimsuit designs out there that you absolutely do not have to compromise on style for fit.

And if all else fails or you’re not sure what style you prefer… you can’t go wrong with black swimsuits!

Flattering and Affordable Swimsuit Styles for Women Over 40

I’ve rounded up a list of the best swimsuit styles and some really great affordable options for you below. If you are shopping for swimsuits, here’s where to shop:

  • Nordstrom – So many different styles to choose from and a good range of pricing to work for all different budgets
  • Summersalt – Well known for ultra flattering silhouettes and great quality
  • Walmart – Very affordable and accessible
  • Amazon – Convenient (prime shipping!) makes trying on at home so easy and wide variety of styles! Check my list here for the best swimsuits that cover your tummy.
  • JC Penny – Tons of great affordable options and size ranges
  • J.Crew – Good quality classic styles and pretty colors/prints. I own so many J Crew swimsuits and wear them year after year, they last forever!
  • Zulily – The best deals! The only catch is that the sales only last a few days so I suggest to check often or subscribe to their newsletters. I’ve gotten some of the best deals on name brand swimsuits and sandals at Zulily.
  • Nordstrom Rack – Another great place for high quality swimsuits at affordable prices. I love to shop in store for the hunt, but online the selection is amazing as well.

One-Piece Swimsuits

One-piece swimsuits are a go to for so many of us!

They give great coverage, support and look good on all different body shapes. My tips to finding a good one-piece are to look for flattering details in the tummy area for tummy control.

This one piece swimsuit is an Amazon best seller and for good reason! I own it myself and it holds you in, in all the right places and is just so comfortable.

Wrap style one-pieces or any style either gathered sides as the ruching is very flattering.

A thicker strap is something to look for, even if it is just a one shoulder style so that it doesn’t dig into the skin.

If you have a pear shape body, I suggest off shoulder or one shoulder one-piece suits that makes your upper body the focus and a darker color or print that flatters your bottom half.

Flattering Bikini Tops

When it comes to bikini tops for older women, I think coverage and straps are the two most important details to focus on.

Higher neck bikini tops are so flattering and offer great coverage, whether you have a small bust or larger bust. Halter tops are also a great choice and flatter most body types.

Adjustable straps are also so important as this gives you the freedom to fit the top to your specific needs as opposed to trying to adapt to a one size fits all situation.

They also can provide extra support where you need it.

Keep support in mind, as you may be running around with your kids and playing with them.

You’ll want to feel comfortable doing water activities in the bikini top that requires the proper support.

Flattering Bikini Bottoms

When it comes to shopping for bikini bottoms, the rise and coverage are what I look at first, and then the color/print which also plays a big role.

Many of us can relate to preferring some kind of tummy control or “sucked in” feature for our bottom half.

You should first decide if you prefer a higher rise, or a mid rise, and then the amount of coverage on your back side.

Look for bottoms that aren’t “cheeky” but that still flatter your shape.

Color/print is also important on the bottom half as you can be strategic with these elements in order to best flatter yourself.

It’s cute when you mix and match! You can mix solid colors with polka dots or animal print.

If you want more curves, look for a higher waisted, colorful and and ruching details to create that effect.

If you are looking for full coverage, maybe boy shorts in a darker color best suits your needs.

Tankinis & Tank Top Swimsuits

Tankinis are so versatile! They come as separates with a top and bottom making it easy to mix and match with multiple styles.

A tankini top has more coverage and also come in a variety of different fits, whether you want something more flowy away from the body or something more fitted to show off your shape.

When looking for tankinis, make sure the top feels supportive and flattering, and that the length of the top hits at a flattering place as well.

Especially if you have a long torso, you’ll want to make sure that the coverage works well for you.

You don’t want anything too short that cuts your torso off at a weird place, or something too long that may end up looking more frumpy than flattering.

Full Coverage Swim Dresses

If you prefer a swimsuit that is more full coverage, a swim dress is a great option for you!

Swim dresses work for all body types and give a similar feel to a tankini with the main difference being they are all one piece and hit a bit longer on the leg.

Wrap style swim dresses are so easy to wear, and even come in handy when walking from the pool back to the hotel, etc.!

They are an all in one “outfit” in a sense. I also love the styles that have a lighter top and darker bottom as I feel like they are the most flattering on all different body types.

Don’t miss these posts if you are still shopping for swimsuits!

The best tips for finding swimsuits that hide your tummy

If you’re looking for the most flattering swimsuits that hide your tummy, this post is for you. Everyone wants to feel good and confident in their swimsuit and there are so many styles available today that help with tummy control.

In this post you will find the best tips to finding a flattering swimsuit to hide your tummy as well as personal reviews from swimsuits that I own and wear frequently.

How to hide your tummy in a swimsuit

Whether you’re looking to hide bloat from the drinks/snacks you plan to enjoy while on vacation, a new mom or just simply not feeling in your best shape, it is totally possible to find a swimsuit that makes you feel amazing and comfortable just as you are!

The most flattering swimsuits to hide your tummy

With Spring and warm weather quickly approaching, I thought it would be fun to share these styles so you are ready and feeling confident for Spring Break and/or Summer. These are my go to styles to feel confident in my swimsuit and I hope they are helpful to you as well!

The best hotel for babies in Las Vegas
From our stay at the Four Seasons hotel Las Vegas

I’m a mom of two and my tummy hasn’t been flat for a really long time!

Part of it is genetics and the other part is just the simple fact that I’ve had two babies! I’m petite (5’2″) and have a tendency to bloat a lot depending on what I’ve eaten that day.

I’ve come to realize as I get older that every body is different and no matter what size you are, we all have spots that we are a little more self conscious about.

From our vacation at Grand Velas Los Cabos

I’m not judging anyone’s body while I’m at the beach and if someone wants to judge my stomach pooch, well that’s on them!

But at the same time, being comfortable in a swimsuit is important to me, especially if I have to chase my toddler at the same time.

So I’m really not looking for anyone’s approval when I’m put on my suit, except my own!

It’s always been hard for me to find swimsuits, especially being that I prefer swimsuits that are fit for petite women.

But I tend to try on a lot and have been able to find quite a few that I love.

My test for swimsuits is that they don’t move around too much, have some kind of tummy control or flattering detail to the waist and fit well.

The ones I’ve shared below (especially the ones I’m wearing in the photos) I highly recommend!

What to look for when shopping for a flattering one piece:

  • Flattering silhouette (wrap style, neckline, higher cut on the leg, etc.)
  • Tummy control panel or ruching detail
  • Adjustable straps
  • Prints or cut outs that flatter your shape (different colors on top vs bottom, cut outs that accentuate curves)
  • Booty coverage
  • Removable cups

Tummy control one piece swimsuits

tips for finding a flattering one piece swimsuit

Wrap one piece suits

Just like wrap tops and dresses, wrap style swimsuits are flattering on every body shape!

If you are petite you’ll want to make sure that the wrap ends where your natural waist is. Sometimes I find that the torso is a bit long on me so it’s not as flattering but definitely keep on trying different styles until you find a flattering fit.

Ruched one piece swimsuits

This ruching detail on swimsuits really helps to diminish the tummy and create flattering curves.

For these kinds of swimsuits, stick to a solid color or small print to avoid it all being too busy.

The one above is great because the solid color stays over the tummy area and then the small stripes add some

These suits look great on all body types and are really great to wear when you have to carry a baby or toddler as you don’t have to worry about things shifting around.

Printed and Cutout one piece suits

You can get creative with fun prints and cutouts that actually work to flatter the body shape as well!

I own so many cut out swimsuits as I like that they are a fun twist on the one piece swimsuit.

As a tie dye fan, this pink one is my latest favorite for the summer.

It’s a nice slim fit in the tummy area and it comes with adjustable and removable straps. The tie in the middle is also adjustable so you can really customize it to fit.

Draw the eyes upward

If you want to keep eyes off of your tummy area, keep the attention up top! A deep V or an angle/cut out detail on the top are different ways and styles that you can look for.

Ruffles, criss cross ties and scallops are all great details to look for.

Flattering high waisted swimsuit bottoms

Some details I look for when purchasing high waisted swimsuit bottoms:

  • Where the waist hits
  • Higher cut on the leg
  • Booty coverage
  • Tummy control panel, ruching or cinching on the sides
  • Prints that help to flatter (vertical stripes, different print on the band vs the rest of the suit)
  • Cut outs that helps to flatter the shape
  • Material (thinker or ribbed material also can act as more of a compression style)
  • Details on the waist (scallop edge, belt, etc. to bring attention upwards)
tips for finding flattering high waisted swimsuit bottoms

High waisted bottoms

My favorite way to still wear a bikini but feel comfortable and sucked in is with high waisted bottoms. I love that there are so many high waisted options available today that really help with tummy control but are still SO cute!

If you are looking for more coverage, find a top that fits a bit longer like the one I’m wearing on the left. I love the full coverage in the top and it’s comfy and stays put.

This suit below has been a go to whenever we go to the pool or beach with the girls. It’s really comfortable, provides full coverage and I can carry my youngest without worrying about anything shifting around.

Where to buy petite swimwear (and what to look for)

Looking for swimwear is always tough and being petite, I am always trying to find suits that will fit a shorter/smaller frame which can often be hard. I have a shorter torso and have trouble finding swimsuits that fit and look good on me.

If you have a tough time finding swimsuits that fit a smaller frame, here are a few go-to spots to find swimsuits that fit petite women and what to look for when shopping online.

Stylish One-Piece petite swimsuits

I find that one piece swimsuits can either go really matronly or really sexy.

It’s funny how it’s hard to find an in-between but now that one piece swimsuits are on-trend it’s easier to find options that will work for us petite ladies.

one piece swimsuit for the pool

This suit is by far one of my favorites as it’s very flattering on, the torso fits great and it’s a bit low cut but not super revealing.

And the most important part it hugs your body in all the right places and you never feel like you’ll fall out of it in the pool.

Swimsuits for Petite Women

You can buy mine here but there are also a few different varieties, one shoulder, scallop and high waist bikini.

What to look for in one piece swimsuits for Petite women

Always look for the cut of the leg. A higher cut is more flattering and will elongate the leg.

Find the right torso length for you and alter if needed.

The torso length is super important as you don’t want it to be too baggy.

If you do find that to be the case, you can get the straps altered to fit so that the torso fits better.

LOOK FOR ADJUSTABLE STRAPS

The easiest and best way is to find swimsuits like these that can be tied and adjusted to your body.

Different patterns, texture or cut outs along the waist always or chest help to make you look taller and slimmer too.

It helps break it up and gives the illusion of a longer waist.

WHERE TO SHOP FOR PETITE SWIMSUITS

There are a few stores that I can always rely on for great swimwear every year.

J Crew

J Crew always has great options and is one of my top spots to shop for petite swimsuits.

The quality is one of the best (I never feel like the material is see through or fits baggy/loose).

They often have sales so it’s easy to get one at a great price!

Nordstrom

Nordstrom is a go-to not just for selection but their generous return policy.

This allows you to purchase a few styles to try on at home and see what works best for you.

I find that their swimsuits are more higher end but it does make a difference if you are looking for a swimsuit that fits you well and has higher quality fabric.

ASOS

It’s not common to find swimsuits specially for petite body types which is why I was excited to see that ASOS has a line of petite swimsuits.

I’ve ordered a lot from their petite clothing line and find that fit tends to run small so I always size up. However, I do love that they cater this line to petite girls and found that it fits great.

Styles are always so cute and trendy and priced right around $50 but often times I can even find them on sale for less than $20!

High waist swimsuits for short girls

High waist swimsuits are great for petite girls, especially those of us with a short torso.

And as a mom, it’s something that I’m more comfortable in than a regular bikini.

I need a suit that I can play in the pool, chase my kids, hold the baby and be comfortable!

Look for bottoms that fit right above the belly button. I find that to be the most flattering rather than too close to the bust.

Mix and match can be fun but I find it to be most flattering to stick with the same pattern on top and bottom.

Fun details like scallops or a small tie/bow are a good way to add some interest without adding too much bulk to the waist area.

Where to find affordable swimwear

I can completely understand not wanting to spend a lot of money on swimsuits.

I live in Seattle and don’t get much use out of my swimsuits unless I go on vacation so I do like having some more affordable choices that I won’t feel so bad about spending money on.

Shop for affordable swimsuits at:

  • Target
  • Walmart
  • Aerie
  • Amazon
  • Gap
  • Old Navy

I love shopping Aerie for their bras and panties but their swimsuits have quickly become my favorites as well. They are mostly under $50 and they have some great sales. Most of the time I can get them for under $30!

Best Swimsuits for last minute shopping

If you are like me and always seem to wait until last minute to shop for your beach vacation, Amazon is always a great spot for cute swimsuits and free 2-day shipping! (If you are not a Prime member yet, that’s just another reason why you should sign up!)

affordable petite swimsuits from amazon

One thing I will say about Amazon is that pictures can be deceiving.

I look at the images to see if I like the style but I read the reviews to make sure that when it arrives it looks like the swimsuit and also to get fit advice.

Most of these suits are under $40 and I own a few of them and have been happy with the quality!

This smocked high waist bikini is one of my favorites that I own. I’ve worn it to every beach/sunny vacation that we’ve traveled to. It holds up well and is comfy and so cute!

The cutest one piece swimsuits under $30!

I’ve fully jumped onboard the one-piece swimsuit trend. I love it!  I’ve been doing lots of shopping and got a few as I’m getting ready to go on vacation soon. Here are the best ones that I’ve found!

The cutest one piece swimsuits under $30!

I don’t know about you but it pains me a bit when I have to spend over $100 on swimsuits. I mean as a clothing designer, I can understand the price tag because of the labor, the detail, the fabrics, etc… but for me since I really only wear swimsuits when I’m on vacation (which is only a few weeks out of the year) I really don’t get my money’s worth.

I started noticing how many cute suits there were lately that were under $50 and well, I did even better and found the best one piece swimsuits under $30!  And yes you have every right to be skeptical about the price and the quality of these suits but to be honest, I was extremely impressed with all of these suits and the quality.  They are all fully lined, most have cups and the fabric is not thin or flimsy at all.

If you saw my instagram story, I shared this suit when I got it.  It’s so cute to wear as a bodysuit as well with jean shorts!  Just to note in all the suits in this post I ordered a size Small and they all fit well.

RUFFLE OFF THE SHOULDER SWIMSUIT

I saw a photo of this cute suit on pinterest and I stalked the internet until I found it.  (Thank you Amazon!) And the best part?  It’s $15.99!  Yes, really!  $15.99!  It fits me perfectly and has padded cups and is super comfortable on.

I mean, look at the details, the ruffles and the polka dots.  Too cute!

OK so the scallops really got me on this suit but what I didn’t expect was how flattering it is on.  The cut out kind of scared me but after I put it on, I was sold.  It actually gives the illusion of having a smaller waist.  I’m not sure how but I think because it breaks it up rather than just a sold black going down your belly, seeing the little bit of skin is really flattering on!  But best thing is that it still covers your belly pooch (if you have one, which I do!)   This one comes with a halter strap that you can take on or off.

SCALLOPED ONE PIECE SWIMSUIT

I love the different patterns on this suit.  As you can tell I either go all black or just all out crazy patterned.  This one is so fun and has the same effect as the scalloped one with the little peekaboo cut out above the tummy.  This one also comes with a removeable halter strap.

These suits with the wording on it is so cute to have when you are going with a bunch of girlfriends.  I mean, it’s just asking to be instagrammed, know what I mean? 🙂 . I’ve seen bridal parties in the “SQUAD” suits with the bridesmaids in one color and tnd the bride in a different color.  It just makes for the cutest photos!  I love the rum + coke one.  I don’t even know why as I don’t even drink rum and cokes but I just love the white lettering on the red.

There’s so many cute sayings, I love the Champagne Problems too!  Oh and these suits are also super flattering on. They are very comfy and not too low cut in the back so you can feel pretty comfortable in them without worrying about exposing too many body parts. 🙂
